Aside from you being a faggot, Wrex is the only other person from the original Normandy crew to genuinely show any kind of happiness that not only is Shephard alive and well. Garrus is a close second, but given the circumstances you meet him, he's incredibly relieved that of all the dirtbag morally dubious mercs to come after him, Shephard is the one that makes it across the bridge. It's more that BioWare at the time was still slowly recognizing that people loved the alien characters significantly more than the 2 human characters on the team.

BioWare was so out of touch and still is for the most part. We came so close yet so far to having a same-sex romance with Thane at the very least. With dialogue recorded and everything but they scrapped it to avoid controversy. Where as with Garrus, a writer or two did propose the idea for him to be bisexual but to no avail. Biggest missed opportunity there ever was in the OT outside of the ending.

That's for sure, especially with the constant failures they've brought upon themselves. From Andromeda to Veilguard. BioWare is standing on thin ice. At least there are other studios taking the helm in terms of story based rpgs. Such as Owlcat and Larian, both of them are working on sci-fi rpgs. Hopefully they turn out well.

That's more so an issue of the companion dialogue. As one had to speak on behalf of the paragon choice while the other was renegade. Which resulted in some moments that were rather out of character.

He adored Shepard since day 1 if you weren't a total dick to him. Garrus was the epitome of labrador puppy before he became jaded and pessimist in ME2/ME3. He saw Shepard as being the perfect soldier who could take care of things without having to justify his every move to his superiors, something Garrus was never allowed to do at his shitty C-Sec job. He even tries to imitate him by becoming Archangel.

Also I agree with the other anons, Wrex respects Shepard for all his help and support, and it was great hearing him call you "brother" or "sister" in ME3. Shep literally elevated him to lowly mercenary to leader of a planet finally rising from its ashes.

When you read the comics and learn about his daddy issues, it all makes sense that he was looking for a father figure, and Shepard became that. I think his morality is the easiest to influence in ME1 and is still pretty malleable in ME2. You can't argue old timers like Wrex of Samara out of "genophage bad" or "muh code"

in ME1 your relationship with Garrus is him admiring you for your "don't play by the book" manner of operation. Your interactions back with him is either trying to tell him that you shouldn't get too ahead of yourself with taking matters into your own hand (paragon) or basically just saying hell yeah to everything he says (renegade).
In ME1 he's honestly a bit lacking as a character. He's just a buddy cop. he becomes cooler in 2 having become a rogue vigilanty but they also kind of neglect his dialogue in that game hence "calibrations" meme.
Weirdly enough its ME3 where Garrus really shines as basically the best companion.
