There are a few specific tracks like Stardust Speedway and Wacky Workbench that I prefer the US version of, but overall the JP soundtrack is better.

I've come to appreciate the US soundtrack a lot these days. Some Zones I like more altogether than their JP counterparts, namely WW and SS. Guitar solos in TT Good Future and WW Bad Future are fuckin sick, and you know what? I kinda dig the boss theme. Doesn't touch the JP one obviously but I can see the vision

Sega of America's audio team originally wanted to do the soundtrack for Sonic 2, but Sega said they didn't like the music they showed them and rejected the proposal.

Then, when it came to Sonic CD, the audio team basically just did it themselves and put it in without asking so they couldn't get rejected again.
Naoto Ohshima, the director of Sonic CD, said he wasn't even aware of the changed audio overseas until years after the game's release.

Once it kicks in, it's super good and definitely underrated. The Japanese version of the track is absolutely stellar but it's a massive shame this gets overlooked because of it.

You mean big arm? That fight is incredible. And it's not as good in S3&K. I don't remember exactly what they changed but it doesn't have the same impact that it does in vanilla Sonic 3. The way the sky goes dark and that ominous boss theme kicks in.

They didn't make new tracks for the past stages because they weren't CD audio, it comes from the console. I don't know the terms for it, redbook or something like that.

It's a shame there wasn't an album release for JP like there was for US. The Spinball remixes that came with it are good too. Those versions of the music are hard to find.
