Just like RTS everything MMOs did that people like about them other games do better
>massively multiplayer
Battlefield, DayZ and BRs
>fashion and hanging out and chatting
VRChat
>grinding loot and build min maxxing
ARPGs like POE
>pvp
Mobas, team shooters and extraction shooters for full loot enjoyers

I moved on from MMOs to Space Station 13 when I realized it had everything I could've wanted from the genre. Shane there's not really any good server that are often alive anymore.

No one plays FFXIV except for multi box mercs on Asura or Bahamut. Those on pservers truly find enjoyment in spending half their 24 hrs a day in a game traveling moreso than combat itself. Even then it's mostly burn parties and once you reach the endgame you better kiss up to the devs and their inner circle.

they shouldve been more like FFXI, Eve and Ragnarok but instead we got crappy WoW remakes like Tera, Rift and XIV.

to answer your question, being a good game doesn't make you money. developers figured that out and started optimizing for other things
