That's because it was already just an attempt to find popular slop that is easy to produce.
After 6th gen demonstrated that trying to be ambitious with controls on console would kill studios, 7th gen was all about designing games around the lowest common denominator control scheme in a massive race to the bottom.
There's a reason that it's the gen that popularized Xinput for the next decade and more.
Even just a few years into 7th gen you can see every game that met even mild success get saddled with trying to appeal to an even lower common denominator with less time, less developer budget, more marketing budget and more monetization than the previous game.

i didn't play many video games until i got older. most of the games i played were just hand-me-downs from my dad or brother or stuff downloaded on the family pc
the ones i remember playing were half life 2, spore, far cry (the first one), feeding frenzy, return to castle wolfenstein, cortex command, alien swarm, star wars republic commando, scp containment breach and dishonored
