Why did VR gaming fail to take off?

It wasn't meant to be used for gaming.
It was a peripheral device that was marketted to the broader mass appeal of vidya which in itself has been in a societally-detrimental free-fall for well over a decade.
It's a tool much like the keyboard and mouse that didn't get the appropriate use-case support.

where did you expect it to be?

Better than light gun shooters. Cheaper than a shooter arcade cabinet.
Has an actually good gun autism game, "Hotdogs, Horshoes & Handgrenades". A Meta Quest shooter has at least a couple hundred players in lobbies during all times. Up to four hundred and more depending the time of day.
I wear wrist weights. Growing muscle. My ego does not fail to take off. Growing big.

As a VR big enthusiast i also barely use VR headsets cause 90% are bulky as FUCK. Yes i know the meganex and stuff exists but they're too expensive for most people and i aint spending 1000-1500 bucks for one, it's absurd.
Also you need a fking rtx5090 to run unreal engine games in VR properly

This. VR Porn is pretty decent.

Too many games tied to specific storefronts or devices. That alone is more research than your average consumer is willing to put in.

It's the cost really. Who's actually willing to fork out the money for the device and then additionally pay for the games where half of them are just tech demos. I feel like it's something you would rent for a week and be done with back in the day.

me. I buy new headsets and new gpus all the time. I don't buy a lot of VR games though as most of them are dogshit so I just play my old ones.

Can you pirate? I've always been on the fence with VR

I play dance games in Pico 4 daily and I don't even notice the supposedly humongous weight/size you people keep complaining about. Some pencil necks out there

Everyone who ever bought a console in the first couple of years after launch

I don't pirate at all. I have an ok sized game library but nothing really new. I tend to play games with VR modes on rather than dedicated VR games.

Yeah, PCVR is pirated like normal PC games and standalone headsets are all easily broken, their games are even more widely availiable than the PC ones. Also you can pirate Meta "exclusive" games on Pico

I wonder if Sony has some kind of patent on the HMD design where the weight of the display is on the headset itself, and not your face.

I’ve owned a PSVR, a Rift, a Rift S, a Quest 2, and a PSVR2, and the Sony devices are easily the most comfortable to wear.

Except that they aren't even buying a console. They buy a glorified monitor that can't run anything on its own.

Johnny Mnemonic style light weight and immersive portable headsets and wireless datagloves so I could surf the web in 3d, all the while trying to avoid chromed Catholic assassins that dress like 13th century friars, look like Dolph Lundgren, and crucify any non-Whites that so much as look at them funny. This was the future we could have had, but instead we got trans kids, cheeto hitler, and tik tok.

WHAT'S IN MY HEAD RALPHIE? WHAT DID YOU PUT IN MY HEAD.

Why do you luddites always have talking points from a decade ago? Everyone buys Quest 3 these days, it's standalone, runs games on its own.

Gamers are fat and standing up is exhausting to them plus the headsets are expensive. Also gamers hate having to deal with extra devices, they just want to sit down at their couch or office chair and press buttons while staring at a screen.

Facebook set it back by 10 years. The fact that there was a very limited selection of Linux compatible headsets meant that it mostly missed out on the Linux rush when Microsoft started dropping support for the last functional Windows release, and the fact that Facebook has been essentially doing anti-marketing for it means that casual integration into game development is slow.
Right now it's just slowly building up.
Monado is looking to provide a solid backbone for the central PC ecosystem and conversion mods are definitely going to quite useful for bolstering the potential library beyond just the handful of VR exclusives that exist.

>Gamers are fat and standing up is exhausting to them
Sounds like a (you) problem, not being sedentary helps you enjoy games more.
>headsets are expensive
If headsets are expensive, then consoles are more expensive and offer a worse experience.
>Also gamers hate having to deal with extra devices, they just want to sit down at their couch or office chair and press buttons while staring at a screen.
Standalone slop doesn't have too much setup for PCVR streaming.

I play VR games a lot, I'm stating the reasons why gamers are slow to adopt VR.

The headsets are bulky goofy and annoying. It's too expensive. There's not enough games. It's not virtual reality just like AI isn't AI its just machine language models.

You could buy and assemble all the pieces for a used Quest 2 off of ebay for dirt cheap, especially over like two or three months.

Quest 3 is a console that you wear on your face. No PC needed. Why do you talk shit about stuff you don't understand?

It's because Meta bought up every mildly promising studio and then mismanaged basically all of them to death because they had corporate ADHD. They wanted to skip the part where they establish a successful video game console business and go straight to their nightmare vision of invading people's lives.
