I fully believe the internet went to shit when going online stopped being a bit of a hassle
When "connecting" to the web stopped being a thing and you were just always on, when smartphones started having regular and easy web connectivity, when there was no longer some delay or a bit of fiddling required
Don't get me wrong, these are great quality of life changes for us actual old web users
But they've stopped filtering normalfags, and that's a shame

It's true. I'm old enough to have been there for the very start of the net and I remember having to tell my mum not to pick up the phone when it rings so I could play SC with my bud. Dumb bitch always picked it up too. The net we knew is dead. It sucks because it was fucking amazing and shit at the same time. It was a huge barrier of entry having to press connect and pay for internet by the hour. Now everything is run by the internet but that internet that was run by people instead of corporations and government is sorely missed.

IMO the biggest barrier being crossed was smartphones
Stuff like dial up net being replaced and the switch to common wifi were... fine... sure they made things easier but this was still an era where most of the web was ours
The real big issue was every normie having a phone in their pocket that can connect to the web, THAT was where shit started going south fast

in reality they're after america, they're using ukraine to sap resources from america to weaken it so that russia can invade since they're a massive powerhouse and ukraine will end up getting a share of the loot

I for one do not miss how laggy image loading was on DSL and every time I get nostolgic for the old web I remember how much it actually kind of sucked.
I think the peak period was during the bulletin board era where forums were quick, smart, and decentralized and none of the HTML5 ad bloat had entered the wide web.
