They are not going to fix the civ-switching with an expansion, the game is already on life-support. It needs to be free.
Even then, they are not going to admit defeat and allow people to keep their civ and their cities in the age swap, it's too integral of a mechanic.

I played a couple games of VI with consolefriends and I realized how bad the new player experience was. One person didn't understand what technologies was actually giving him and navigating the UI was really cumbersome to tell what different things actually did. So many problems could be solved by mousing over something for a tooltip but it's console so they just suffer instead.

Bad UI
Leaders look like shit
Can't really build wide because the map doesn't support it
Districts and buildings lost visual recognition so it's hard to see what a town has
Combat is slower
Unlockable perks that any leader can pick
Changing civs partway through a game because devs have gone on record saying that late game civs being good late game is bad game design
Voice acting is sub par
Lack of map types
Game is slower
Visual bugs
Countries and leaders not in base game so they can be sold later
Only a handful of good themes

I really don't know how they could fuck up this much.

The designers percieved 2 problems they wanted to solve:
>the games are too long
>nobody finishes games
They decided to divide the games into (currently) 3 eras, and at the start of each era, you get to choose a new civilization and unlock new goals/mechanics. There's a "science victory" in the ancient era, the middle era, the modern era. This is supposed to get people to actually play games from start to finish, and give a clear break so games don't last that long.

IMHO this failed, but then again, I never had the above two problems. I like the longer games, and I only quit once the final outcome is obvious. The hard reset on eras doesn't make it so the final outcome isn't obvious early, I can still clearly see when I've alrady won.

tl;dr consolification of the game, despite it being a PC centric game
But the fan, and tourists, reaction has been very overblown. Its nowhere as bad as you'd think based on reading /v/.

It's more that it limits the amount of damage you can do from one tile, making veteran units way more valuable. Also makes combat more manageable imo with generally smaller army sizes. It can be a pain once you get 20+ units attacking an area though, I do.miss stacking for that.

in civ5 you get first spies, the idealogies, and with a frequently used mod, you get monopolies. these are meaningful mechanics added in the middle of the game. but they are only a speedbump towards the road of innevitable "i already won/lost, so i quit" ending
as with RPGs, the turn based nature of the game makes it so trivial encounters are boring, because they are slow without offering a challenge
even in good games like baldur's gate 3 you will see fights that you know you WILL win, 100% of the time, without wasting resources, but you still have to play through them at a turn based slow speed. HOI3 also has this. Total war also has this. and in civilization games, the entire game ends up being this, a trivial encounter that is a chore to finish. the competitive part of the game is over, now you are doing homework to see the ending slide.

none of the civilization games have been able to resolve this. civ7 dividing the game into essentially a match made of 3 halfs, doesn't fix it either. the last part is the part where, about halfway through, you end up quitting again. armies are too big, you have too many cities, resources are too numerous, optimization is too minmaxed and convoluted at that point, and you end up either rushing through it, or quitting.

Combat is the best in the series. Ironically, AI also handles it the best in the series.
City building is the best, if you liked Civ6's ideas.
Resources allocation is a good idea, it just becomes too much at some point. And you should be able to manually trade them.
Navigable rivers are fun, and its horrible that took so long to implement.

"New World" mechanic is so-so in theory, and bad in practice.
World generation is bad, and the maps are dull.
Game speed is bad, the game is too fast.
UI is bad, and lacks important information, and even basic color coding.
Leader traits are bad design and bad practice and I hate it.
The per-game unlocks tree is so-so design and so-so implementation.
What autists most complain about, the leader-civ distinction, is also both so-so design and so-so practice. It was always the case that the leaders were AI players, and now the AI players can also utilize the mechanic of picking a civilization. You are playing against Attila, who is playing the French civilization. He's the player, with his personal style, and he picked France. Whatever, doesn't bother me.

The automatic upgrading of units, and the transition from one age to the next, is HORRIBLE and a major speed bump and I am sure, a major game abandonment moment. I know they meant it as a "save your game now, continue tomorrow" moment, but I bet people start a new game more of than than load that save. This is the biggest issue with Civ7.

It is good for multiplayer, but sucks in single player because the AI can't deal with it. The main problem Civilization has with it is that units are slow, and there are a lot of choke points, so wars turn into traffic jams. Games like Old World and Panzer General (from fucking 1994) solved this problem by giving units a lot of movement and a lot of room, but Civilization just refuses to actually change the flow of warfare from when it was doomstacks.

Japan is, by area, mostly abandoned rural villages and dying historic towns disconnected from the railway system. The nation went too far into the urban centralization meme and is now in the process of slow brutal collapse as it does not have enough productve people to feed the millions of people whose only job is to bow to richer nobles for 10 hours a day.

That sums it up pretty well. Especially the part about resource allocation. It's ironic, they reduced the micromanagement in so many areas just to add it back here.
>I know they meant it as a "save your game now, continue tomorrow" moment, but I bet people start a new game more of than than load that save. This is the biggest issue with Civ7.
Yup. It's actually kinda fun to try out a new civ, but the age transition is so rough that it destroys any motivation I have to continue the game.

The game is just no-fun-allowed. You can't rename cities, can't rename units besides your generals. Nukes basically don't exist since once you unlock building them you also unlock the project that wins you the game. No pangea, you will play a symmetrical continents map every single time. You have almost no ways to customize your game at all in fact, can't even turn off the shitty disasters. All terrain has been balanced to be useful, so nowhere feels special. Rather than adding extra fish and fur resources to snow tiles, just buff the base tiles until they're barely distinguishable from grass or plains tiles. Culture has been reduced to just another flavor of science, it no longer has any impact on your borders or diplomatic relations or anything. A culture victory only really needs enough culture to unlock hidden antiquities (and you can't trade fhem either.) It shows how uninspired the unique civics are when the biggest reason to pick them is the increased settlment limit. Wonders are completely forgettable too.

Also the civilopedia sucks ass. How do you fuck that up? No hotseat multiplayer, I could go on.
