none of the games in the whole smt franchise have had genuinely good gameplay. all of them are fine, but have one unbalanced strategy that's clearly not accounted for correctly when designing the game. every new one I try ends up playing out the same: fumble around in the beginning until you identify what's broken, then steamroll the whole game with that one strategy. SMT 1 had zio-spam, P5R had rushing darts for max baton pass. even on the hardest difficulty these games aren't "hard" but rather they're "obtuse" in that they sometimes hide these broken strats well enough that it takes a couple playthroughs to find them. that's really the only differentiator between the good and bad ones gameplay, how well they hid the "make the game easy now" strategy.

yeah, that pretty much sums up my experience as well. you have to handicap yourself by figuring out which strategy is busted and then purposefully avoiding it if you don't want to really break the game
