That’s straight up not true. In the three lap races you can get huge breakaways because there’s just so much to shortcut.the intermission tracks are so long and there’s so much extra item boxes that the frontrunners practically can’t frontrun and just get blendered repeatedly, keeping the field tighter together. So by bagging it’s trivial to get first with one big shortcut or a shock dodge at the very end.

Mk8d had no real shortcuts, everything was streamlined and easy for anyone to pick up. As long as you took the corners tight and didn't fuck up you'd place well.

MKW has track specific shortcuts which are very technical and cannot be realistically performed in a race without practice. You can still place consistently in the middle ranks, and occasionally get a win due to items but if you want to consistently do well you need to know the tracks and tricks.

I know where I stand on the game because I primarily play Knockout Tour online as a dumb party game and enjoy time trials for speed autism, but I was interested in the argument about whether or not bagging is actually stronger in World than in previous games. Not that I'd engage in it because it's not as fun, but I'd still like to know.

You can hold it the entire race if you want, and use it that way, though.
HOWEVER
Most high vr players ALSO know about when anyone saving lightning is liable to use it, so will pop stars and boos at that time, so you'll actually more likely help them. They actually plan around people like you existing.
Also you can't sit in place and get items, Nintendo will physically force you to drive if you're not, and iirc nerfs items pulled from box groups you haven't left a certain distance from.

If middle place could reliably just be pulling reds and mushrooms, then anyone trying to just blast past gets fucked up, and individual plans to move ahead can materialize, instead of "the pack" being a clusterfuck of npc racers that it's better to just get behind rather than contest.

Some tracks favor frontrunning, some bagging, and, shocker of shockers, some tracks favor both, depending on your own stats, and the context you're playing in.
There being a bias one way or another in terms of which tracks doesn't matter too much in the grand scheme, because niether is dominant. You have to be prepared for both.
As opposed to World, where bagging is objectively correct 100% of the time.
The only other time one of these has been as dominant over the other is Super Circuit frontrunning, because Bowser & DK are fucked up.

Junkyard Hog has better non-road speed stats, which are laughably bad, even in World, in exchange for worse stats in acceleration and handling.
The worse handling of the hog is actually nice for time trials, since it means you can get mini turbos off better turns, but in an actual race, this niche upside isn't worth the hit to acceleration. And the off road speeds are a fucking meme, even on tracks that actually have a chunk of map that IS water.
Off road doesn't help for dirt roads and shit either. You can actually see when it kicks in, when your wheels enlarge. It's shockingly infrequent, and the better choice is to just not be a retard and stay on tbe road.

These hidden stats are way worse than the ones in 8 Deluxe, what the hell were they thinking? In that game, besides mini turbo, the only hidden stats were glider speed, water speed, and anti-gravity speed. The best out of those to have was anti-grav speed, since that was the most common alternative surface, but it wasn't that terrible to pick a combo with more of the other two since 90% of the game is regular road anyway, and it was cool to have an advantage when one of the few tracks with a lot of gliders or water showed up.
But in World, two-thirds of the characters and karts are just objectively sub-par with no real benefit. For what purpose?

I think an easy fix would just be to make all characters have the same road speed in the tier that they're in, and having a speed bonus either in terrain or water. A carefully placed +1 to one of the speed stats for every character, a balanced, universal buff. It'd be harder to do the same thing for the vehicles, but having shitty karts is a considerably smaller issue imo.
Then, players would actually have an interesting choice to make on whether they prefer extra water or terrain speed. It'd be cool to have a meta where people think for themselves for once instead of blindly following the mob, y'know?

It sort of works, but the best vehicles have great accel and good road speed, the best characters have both decent speed and godly acceleration. Bowser is also a bit outclassed by characters like Wario, since he has the same road speed stat, but higher acceleration and handling.
