If there's a set amount of them there's obviously no problem, since its just a progression mechanic at that point. If you can farm them its a problem

Most games dont gove you enough to make a noticable difference. Or have a convoluted stat system that makes it irrelevant.

But the idea of making permanant modifications to the character is tempting especially if there are downsides as well like the devil chips from digimon.

I think it works better in games like wizardry where party members are replaceable. And ostensibly disposable. Games where the party is fixed characters make it harder to use.

But a good game would have the character react in some way beyomd the stat modifications.

Porn games that do not have some kind of permanent physical or mental change to the protagonist over the course of the game are a waste of time

There's nothing wrong with it, unless they also raise the amount of skill points needed to raise a stat past a certain threshold like in Gothic 2 NOTR.
