It's always really bizarre watching devs see a game of theirs get successful, get angry because it was successful "for the wrong reasons" and then devote the entire sequel to getting rid of what people liked about it. The isolated feeling and spooky atmosphere was great, but I don't remember ever thinking "Gee, you know what this is missing? Unknown has been dead for a long time. They threw away Natural Selection and then most of what people liked about Subnautica 1. It was his choice. They had a good run.
I'm gonna spin up an NS1 game with bots to remember the good times.

I just wish NS2 hadn't been stuck with a live service model chasing mtx and esports because now that game is permanently fucked up and dead. They threw away a lot of fun stuff from the earlier versions chasing the competitive meta.

As someone that has worked in development, that is 1000% what this means.

The original team wasn't doing it as fast as shareholders wanted, probably pushed back on suggested timelines to get shit right and or not kill themselves in the process, likely got fired for it and will be replaced by AI (actually indians). I've seen this exact process happen repeatedly the last 2-3 years, its the same shit every time, its like a generic CEO strategy they teach at CEO school, and it'll continue to happen until engineers/devs start unionizing seriously.

Krafton wants returns. They're expediting development to get a product to market ASAP. Whatever they have is what they got. At BEST things will be cut (huge bonus, SN1 less is more), but no doubt you're going to see a chocolate fish staring back at you in every reflection to remind you how diverse and valid you are in a first person game. Maybe one of Indian devs will have the wherewithal to accidentally delete that shader.
