Keeping famous franchises on hold because the target audience is not large enough to justify a big project is stupid. Even if the return of a new entry is only 1% of what the big project is making, you still want to maintain an image that fans can trust your company.
That's why Bethesda's ID Software, recently released new source ports for Doom 1 + 2. It wasn't to make money (although it probably did). It was to keep a strong franchise in the spotlight, keep fans interested in the company's products, etc.
