I knew the second I saw Renoir and the masked girl that he was Maelle's father (especially with the masked girl's obsession with him) and either it was a time loop game or there was going to be a twist like she was a recreation of the masked girl but not horribly burned. Turns out I was right, I just didn't know the whole painting thing. If you did not see something like this coming you genuinely did not pay any attention. You can criticize it if you want, but don't say "Suddenly" "In the last quarter" "I can't think of any answers"

All the clues are from the beginig that it's about the family.

Yes, but only because the reserve party didn't have a third member to round it out and half his skill tree was still locked when he died.
Then, Maelle didn't resurrect him, and I was disappointed they expected me to have 2 characters in the reserve party without being able to switch out characters in battle.
My only gripe with the battle system, actually. I don't even mind that it devolves into parryslop.

Whether or not you like the twist, the dislogue and character writing are consistently excellent start to finish. No other RPGs reaches it there. But they're unassailable so you attack the twist ignoring all of the build up leading to it. GOTY is in the bag.
