Can somepony explain to me why the PS2 is the best selling console of all time? You mean to tell me 160 million people saw shit like Crash Bandicoot and felt the need to hop on that bandwagon? At least nintendo had pikmin and mario super strikers

Third-worlders that can't afford good consoles.
Also, there are Sony TVs that have built-in PS2s. These count as PS2 sales.

snoy had taken a huge portion of the market with the original playstation and the followup was highly anticipated, the DVD player was also a big selling point too. at the same time nintendo was trying to recover from their missteps with the 64 (only to mess up again) and the xbox was a newcomer. they also sold the damn thing forever

at the time it was basically the most affordable DVD player. That it doubled as a game console was quite the bonus.
It didn't take too long for competitive DVD players to come around, but they weren't THAT competitive, so PS2 held quite a value add advantage for a good while, at a time when migration from VHS was desireable.

Basically, a bunch of non-gamers bought the thing because they wanted to play movies
and Sony has been releasing movies on Playstation ever since.

it was pretty cheap
it was great
it had the biggest library of all time
the library was videogames in their absolute prime
>3d graphics super accessible but not backbreaking to develop at all
>franchise trolls hadn't locked down genres to a just one or two giants, ergo lots of racing games, lots of sports games
>consolewar faggotry hadn't hit peak divisiveness yet
That all means no technical barriers, no legal barriers, no corporate barriers, an absolute flood of competitive game development. Oh and there was no DRM shittery yet, you could play everything offline too, often in splitscreen. How many splitscreen racers or shooters can you buy now? Fuck all.
Best console in the best generation and if you missed out that's sad

It was a relatively cheap DVD player and you needed a DVD player back then if you wanted to watch anything good.
So lots of people, including non-gamers, just bought a PS2.

First, it was the cheapest DVD player on the market, and DVD was the new sex at the time. No more rewinding, better image and sound, menus, etc.
People take for granted what a big deal that was in the day.
It was hyped like crazy, the cell processor was said to be sophisticated enough that embargo kept it from enemies of the west.
Backward compatibility was great for a few, and good in hindsight, but back then people were less savvy and more into the new thing.
Never mind that the games for it were so good they are getting remade and "remastered" to this day.
Except for the controller (debatable) it was pretty much the most perfect piece of gaming hardware ever made.

It's really probably more like 150M but then the DS got too close and then they pulled 5M out of their ass. Then the Switch got too close and then they said surprise we manufactured 160M and then just decided not to tell anyone until now.

The PS2 was the last console gen when Japan was still relevant and cared
Most jap studios were unable to make the jump to HD so they moved to mobile/tendie portables which only widened the gap between west and east.
Now the west has gone to shit and Japan isnt there anymore to pick up the baton

It was an all in one thing. The DVD player obviously played a role. And the library was huge. Yeah you didn't get EVERY Gamecube or Xbox game but you got enough of them. And if you did use another console primarily, you always ended up getting a PS2 to plug the holes. Gamecube never got Burnout 3 (it did get 1 and 2), but it's on Playstation. Xbox didn't get Silent Hill 3 (it did get 2 and 4), but it's on Playstation, etc.

ive got so many questions:
1. is the tablet/tv on all the time?
2. if so, on what basis do you even decide the program and does the cat really watch it and understand whats going on on the screen?
3. does it use the bed or just sleep whereever? because most cats ive known just decide to sleep on random shelves or some shit
4. is the pillow cover with all the other animals depicted confusing or irritating for the cat? why not just use a plain one?
5. was this entire project just done for so[y] points on reddit? who the fuck would waste 15 minutes a weak dealing with cat laundry, new sheets and what not for what is essentially a nerd cave for your pet?
