Has VR any must have games yet or is it still basically useless?

I haven't played many VR games, but Half-Life: Alyx is mindblowing. I'm playing through it right now and knowing that I'm near the ending, I wish it had more firefights against Combine soldiers. Hopefully some of the mods fill in that gap.
VR isn't useless, but it's like the early days of PC gaming; Not without obstacles and flaws but it's definitely a step into the future. Getting into VR now is still the equivalent of beta testing new technology in my opinion. It's fun and it's nice to get a head start and get your brain adapted to VR, but headsets will evolve quite a bit into something more compact and feature rich before it truly becomes mainstream.

Modded VR games don't count. They are not made with VR in mind and are terribly janky, use crutches to work and are barely playable. Even official 2D to VR conversions are like that.

people often tell you to wait until VR becomes "good" but it's already good, it's crazy how it morphs your brain to accept VR environments as real. sure there aren't quite enough VR games out there, but just the feeling of having experienced VR and having become accustomed to it is insane

Good recommendation, but I already played it. Not all the way through yet though. The combat is enjoyable, but different. In HLA the Combine appear more intimidating and have more interesting tactical variety. HL2VR is good but after playing HLA, I can see why HLA has slower combat and more cramped levels.

There's a lot of games to play, but there is very weak marketing on most of them because the only people making them are small indie studios with few exceptions like Half-Life Alyx, Arkham or Metro, so you're unlikely to hear about any of them.

Some notable games that are worth playing that aren't mentioned above: Ancient Dungeon VR, Vertigo Remastered, Vertigo 2, Duck Season, Boneworks, Bonelab Arizona Sunshine Remastered, Arizona Sunshine 2, Paint the Town Red VR, Halo CE VR Mod (Not the Unreal 'fan game'), Superhot VR, Vendetta, and Compound.

Games I would say that people claim are good like Amid Evil VR, Escape Simulator, and Phasmophobia are terrible. A separate subject could be grind slop to be found in VRChat.

It feels like if we had stuck with the 90s or early 2000s design philosophy for PC games, we would have more compelling VR conversions.
Context sensitive canned animations don't seem like they'd translate as well as more cursor oriented interaction.

Finally, I got this turd recommended to me, people calling it "stalker vr", and yeah, sure, it has elements of stalker, but it's a dead, boring world.
I cannot for the life of me, get excited about shooting black silhuettes.

If you have a friend, you should co-op SURV1V3.
It's a slow paced zombie game that leans more on being tactical and careful regarding the way you go about the infested town.

Enticing all the devs over to the Quest platform has pretty much shackled VR games development to its shitty hardware. Also most game are designed around you not having a PC.

i hate all those unfinished and "make your own fun" games
like fucking h3, swords and sorcery, hellsplit arena and so on, all of those crappy games are exactly the same

i expected vr would be full of games like hl2, like vertigo 2(only good since this was made by 1 guy), but nope, no fps games at all
even hl alyx is more of a walking sim than a shooter

Not really. I tried the superdepth 3d reshade and mapped my headset movement to emulated opentrack which the game supports but it's horrible to play and made me sick even though I can rocket jump just fine in quake 3 vr.
The devs would rather support linux head tracking modules than give us a basic bitch VR rendering camera. They hate VR with a passion the filthy german boomer cunts.

they dont hate it. they just got burned hard by making poor mans x rebirth VR version. Instead of just integrated basic ass 3d with adjustment so the UI is readable in game

there is also the thing how X4 is very cpu heavy and they are scared of over tacking the GPU also which vr 3d does. But they sound more like excuses

When I ran the game with superdepth3d I set the game render to a custom resolution of 5K (2500x2500 per eye) and I had very much playable framerate on my 12700k + 4080.
I would say around 100-110ish in empty space and 70fps near a space station.
What boggles my mind is that people are willing to play MSFS in comparison at 45fps or even less with dogshit blur settings so the performance argument doesn't hold too much of a candle.
X4 is the only space sim that doesn't suck dick and it's criminal that we do not have basic vr rendering. Like no one is asking for damn vr controller interaction or manual reloads and other dumb shit when all the power users are on flight sticks + kbm.

people are very happy with basic ass 3d vr with seated play. the goggle are just too fucking good and straight up upgrade to any monitor of any size. which feels like staring into the game world through a tiny little window.

anytime some developer stumbles upon this simple truth, like frontier with elite dangerous or subnautica, you mostly hear praise from the plug and play gamer. who somehow got a headset but cant be assed to tinker around with shit like vorpx profiles or reshade to force flatties into 3d

>Like no one is asking for damn vr controller interaction or manual reloads
that is the thing. nobody is asking for it as a must have condition but all developers seem to be under the impression that you must have motion control or it aint a proper VR version

Like in space sim category elite dangerous showed how well basic controller but full 3d works in spehs

Boneworks is my favorite VR game so far. I know it's jank, but I liked the simulation aspect of it. Alyx is a better "game", but you have more freedom in boneworks.

If deckard ever releases, gaben better push the industry forward and make five-digit gloves the norm. It's crazy how all the companies still fuck around with those stupid fucking controllers of theirs, it's so 2014.. even now, when brand new vr headsets are released, they still have the frigging balls to also release new controllers for it, instead of doing the logical thing and making those damn vr gloves we are all so obviously waiting for.a literal kid made them a couple of years ago, i saw a youtube video of him proving that it worked. Granted, it was quite large and bulky, but still.. if he could achieve that with homebrew off-the-shelf materials, how is it possible that a billion dollar corporation can't do this???
