I wouldn't recommend using the cricket when you're a beginner.
It's very capable in experienced hands but you're better of starting with a compass and some lynchpins

I wish there was like, an infrastructure role I could do. The Tarantula lets you carry vehicles and stuff but that's pretty high up on the rank. I want a cheapo transport helicopter I can use to pick up crashed pilots and ferry infantry.

Sadly there's no infantry.
If you buy a plane and you lose it that's that. It's gone.
The advantage of buying is that you can buy stuff above your rank.
What I like to do is get a compass and hit some ground targets in low intensity areas until I can buy a Revoker.
If you're out of money, spawn a cricket on a front close to enemies and shoot whatever you can find.

I'd like to play the role of an AWACS.
Also, are there any games that automagically make VOIP comms sound like they're coming from whatever aircraft a player is piloting/riding within? I was thinking it might help mask some shitty microphone setups (while adding to overall immersion, of course).
I've seen clips of the ACE mod in ArmA (I think?) doing just that, but for infantry radio.

You can play literal awacs in nuclear option.
As for the radio thing, the built in DCS radio has that functionality now but I think most people still don't use the built in stuff. I'm not sure, I haven't played DCS in a while.

Yeah, that's what I've usually been doing but most of the enemies either get killed too quickly by other players, or I get oneshot by AAA

The other players being faster thing does suck. It usually happens when I join a server late after restart. It's really annoying to plan and execute the perfect sneak attack only for a darkreach to drop in 8 nukes from 100km away.
As for the AAA, you just gotta get good?
