I guess, but I would consider facial features a key part of character design. The art style change made the character more appealing, which is the entire goal of a good design.
They problem is the comic character is designed to be deliberately ugly so that it dose'nt appeal to the male gaze, because it was designed by an activist for social political reasons. That's why people reject the comic, but embrace the anime design.
