What if the game isn't really good? Its at 73% and most reviews basically say that it is a mid tier game with generous bias because the fan base really like the characters. I mean its furries, cmon.

But beyond the seriousness of hand damage, making the game harder without any real benefit (e.g. adding a hard but optional technique to the existing game would be beneficial and add to player expression) would just gatekeep and reduce the playercount. Fighting games are hard to play even when the inputs are easy, between mental stack and knowledge checks and reactions time, but what would making the player fight to get their inputs to come out in the first place add?

I'd like to hear your reasoning for this. Personally speaking I hate when my intentions in a fighting game clash against a tight execution window and I get hit or drop my combo for it. The character I play in GBVSR—a game with a generous input window and optional one-button specials—has an unbufferable 1f link in one of his BnBs, and finding myself forced to go for it in situations where I can't convert with anything else and need it to kill, then failing to get it, is endlessly frustrating. I would change the game to make that link bufferable in a heartbeat if I could, I like the mindgames and mental stack aspect of fighting games but not the "input this in 1/60th of a second or eat shit" aspect of older games that predate regular input buffers.

the way melee works is, the links/bnb's/combos with tight execution and barely any room for error arent really required but are more of a bonus. the faster you play the more you are rewarded, the more frame perfect you are the more you are rewarded. the harder your inputs are the more you are rewarded. melee is just a game that rewards you for playing the hard way in an optional way and its why the game feels so satisfying to play. on top of rewarding you for playing faster/more frame perfect it also rewards you for having a good sense of neutral/fundamentals and punishes you for playing in a spammy way. i would like to see some of these things in rivals 2. currently everything in rivals 2 just feels so braindead easy and it makes the game no fun to play as a result.
