And it infinitely more fun than 99% of AAA garbage. When will devs realize that spending hundreds of millions on bloat isn't admirable?

I got burned out on 6. It felt way too repetitive, which is a dumb complaint about a timeloop game. It didn't help that WB2 came out so close to it, either.

I mean that's just lying, collecting weapon and armour crates and going through the weapon upgrade gatcha system is pretty integral to the game progression.
Also holy shit it's very hard to recommend edf5 (or edf in general) to people when d3 consistently refuse to drop the price below AAA release launch price despite the B-movie production values.

4.1 or 5. 5 is a reboot, so you don't have to play 4.1 to understand it, but 6 is a direct sequel to 5 and benefits greatly from having it fresh in your mind. I suggest you play 5 followed by 6, then give yourself a break to avoid burnout (the games are very samey), then go back to 4.1.

I can't say I blame you. It is stupidly grind-intensive for how short it is. Only 15 missions? Really? That said, it did do some cool stuff that was never repeated. Survival mode was neat, but I never got to play it with anyone since the game was dead when I played it years later. The remix mode is a fun concept as well.

I love EDF too anon but about half of this is bullshit but it's not everyday I see an EDF thread so I'll bite. EDF isn't fun because it has "less"; it's fun because it's a 3D arcadey shmup and one of the few games that keeps co-op and split screen alive in some way today when most games have left these things behind for online VS. It has the same arcadey and cartoonish spirit of old-school shmups like Contra, just killing everything on screen with cool weapons.
I do wish EDF was more popular. It's one of the few reasons I don't hate owning a PS but I've gotten tired of paying for PS Online, which I let expire recently. I hope EDF ports more to Switch going forward, maybe then it will actually become more popular and I can still own it physically.

>the EDF games are Japan only currently
For modern EDF they release in Japan first (which I usually import) but they usually come to the west eventually, years later. EDF4-6 I imported and played much earlier than the NA release.
On the Switch there are less EDF ports and those tend to be the older ones and Japan-only. I don't think any of the modern ones are on Switch, maybe because the Switch 1 was too weak for them.

I can't believe how long the translation took to come out. 6 in Japanese was easily the most kino gaming experience I've ever had though, I played 5 to death and was going in completely blind with 6 and it frequently did things I absolutely did not expect while using 5 as a basis for everything in perfect ways. I think it does suffer in replays from its structure, but that first playthrough is worth the sacrifice.

The QoL changes are okay but it comes at the detriment of everything else, missions and pacing of missions is demonstrably worse despite mostly being copy pastes, there's tons more dead time waiting for arguably worse dialogue to finish in order to proceed with missions, the refinery is such a horrendous map it gives me PTSD, and personally I just don't like ayys and frogs as enemies compared to the Ravagers.

In fact, the only two good QoL changes to me is removing roll spam from Ranger by introducing sprint and making Fencer's arsenal a bit more useable, I literally never had issues free-handing and landing banging airstrikes on Air Raider, it in-fact tickles my brain more to do it like that.

Get ready for a real difficulty spike, especially in DLC2. You're going to beat your head on a few missions before you'll be able to beat them, especially on Inferno. Also be ready to grind for weapons, since they don't have a lot of good drop rates. If you think you're patient enough, then go for it. If you play online, you may get a few clues on how to beat it, but otherwise it's going to be more of a puzzle game than a proper honest shootout.

Drone is fine but aiming them kinda troublesome especially if you pick 5 pov. The patch make 6 pov a bit farther is a godsend

I really hope that Sandlot tones back on making epic setpieces, or at least learns how to better integrate the exposition into the gameplay. Some of their attempts to innovate in EDF 6 felt like they were copying the superficial design philosophy of stuff like Gears of War-and strayed from what made the older games great. I think that there's a healthy medium between having a solid arcade shooter and a cinematic toy box. I hope the next game doesn't just copy helldivers as their next base.

Also, I think they should return to focusing on having larger softer groups of mixed enemies. The beefier androids are just not as fun or demanding to play against as the tetrad of spiders, black/red ants, and bees. The very late game and DLC show how the new enemies can really complement each other, but it was disappointing that you mostly fought one or two enemy types at a time in the base game. You really shouldn't have to pay for DLC to get the trademark puzzle-esque EDF missions.

EDF 6 is the absolute peak of the series in every regard and it's not even close. Except the singing but it did nevertheless grow on me The small amounts of QOL add up and the campy kino story being told unironically had me basedfacing and laughing my ass off at times.
Not to downplay how good EDF 4.1 and 5 were, but they've been dethroned.

Nah, 6 kind of sucks. Even if you ignore the shitty port and online, it's too eager to show off the new enemies and doesn't really mix them well. All the ruined future missions kind of suck too.

Yeah no. First time experience is stronger compared to EDF 5 but every subsequent playthrough is a worse experience than the last. The DLC missions are core EDF experience, too bad you need to fork out even more money for those.

I've gotten pretty tired of franchises I want to get back into but every time I check in on them, everyone's saying "7/10 it fixed some things, made some things worse, and everyone still plays it with mods". Like after a dozen releases you'd think this shit would be refined into a buttery smooth perfect experience.

No one cares. The active player numbers for both games speak for themselves. A 20-year-old franchise is struggling to retain its dying playerbase while a young challenger can comfortably maintain 50k concurrent players every month. The industry is healing because people has started to wise up and boycott shovelware slops.

Helldivers sits on a razors edge where every few months the community has to scream "we WILL stop playing unless you finally fix this" and then right at the last minute before yet another review bomb, they hastily scramble out a patch. Helldivers has almost died like 6 times now.
