Dissida Opera Omnia was probably the best iteration of traditional turn based I've played and had a lot of interesting mechanics like turn delay, attaching yourself to an enemies turn to wedge yourself into the turn order, turn deletion etc. Shame it went EoS.

The only real time element in the combat were the character overdrives. And outside of spamming attack reel on the post game super bosses, it really doesn't fucking matter if you pass those.
Hell, Yuna, Rikku and Kimari didn't even have that either.

really though I find "pure" turn based RPG's to be so slow and boring. 99% of the time the game does not have the depth to warrant the slow pacing, when you just mash attack or the strongest spells you have, because the only fights that you'd use disabling spells against is bosses and they're always immune to them. A real gripe with the genre at large is that they give you status effect spells and dispel and debuff and..... you never use them because trash random encounters you can win with just spam damage, and bosses are immune.
I'm happy when there's the occasional strategy based fight where bosses AREN'T immune but they're kinda rare.

Also FFX has a system where each action takes a different amount of time. Late game you can do neat stuff with rapid strikes and especially the almost instant item use skill.
Or you can use all your character overdrives on the same turn and wonder why Yunalesca now ended your ass by taking 4 turns in a row. You know, because you're a dumb kid that in like 50 hours never figured out the weird window on the screen at all times is the upcoming turn order.

Many RPGs suffer from bad encounter design sure. And devs seem to always misunderstand this part by throwing in more gimmicks to the combat system while still keeping boring enemies.

If the enemies can wipe your party quickly enough, then trying to disable them or protecting yourself with status skills generally becomes a good answer.
Another thing that helps is mixing damage and statuses together, generally giving you the option between moderate damage+chance of status or big damage but no status, so now you have to constantly evaluate how much health the enemy has and how threatening they can be

well main point was just, FFX and FF in general after FFIV is not pure turn based it always has a twist to try and make it more interesting.
the only pure turn based JRPG's I've played without any twists have been DQ games and while I enjoyed the aesthetic and so on there are times I literally felt myself nodding off because of the combat system.
I loved DQ5 in general but it's combat could have used "a twist"

Because these games fucking suck. Well FFX is pretty good but most standard jrpgs don't play like FFX, that game had a lot of unique boss ideas, like fighting that undead bitch where you had to balance undead statuses the entire fight, or having to use electric magic on the chair to hit the robot during the blitz ball shit.
