It's not everyone else's fault Radiant Silvergun (and also Ikaruga) is one of the most routing heavy games possible, but is also a game with subpar training options AND Saturn emulation itself makes N64 emulation look like Dolphin by comparison.

Both Sin and Punishments and Alien Soldier are better anyway.

Disagree about Sin and Punishment, but Alien Soldier is an 11/10 game. Love Guardian Heroes and Gunstar Heroes the most though.

I'm in my 30's and I have dozens of bought shmup games. I suck at it. But the only ones I 1CC'd is Mecha Ritz Steel Rondo and Graze Counter. I guess Sol Cresta but I did it on easy.

I'm just messing with you. What are you playing now? I recommend Deathsmiles or Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu for a step up that's still not too hard.

Blue Revolver has a great mission mode that helps get the basics of routing & reading bullet patterns down, and it's just a fucking great game on top of that. Highly recommend

Watch my replay of it and pay attention to the order of stages I play. Also where I use hyper on the swamp, volcano, and graveyard. These are the best places to get the score needed for extra lives. You're also immune to contact damage from obstacles and enemies while hypered. I managed to get the 1CC in a few days of play. It shouldn't be too hard. Also don't use bombs against jitterbug even if you die, you'll get 2 free extra lives. Then bomb spam the final boss.

Saturn emulation has been excellent since about 2008 with the fantastic SSF emulator (which i used to play through panzer dragoon saga and a bunch of other games).
And today there's Mednafen/Beetle, which i run through a CRT in lossless RGB Component, and is brilliant.
Plus there are 2 or 3 other emulator options if you want to run games in high def.

N64 emulation was completely solved in 2018 with the release of Angry Lion, which was quickly backported into every other N64 emulator.

Yeah and it's good since it's just a port of the 360 port. I play the Saturn version nowadays though. The 360/Switch/PC port is incredibly useful for 1CC training, I probably wouldn't have the mental stamina to get it done without the 360 port.

It took me around 20 hours to complete a 1CC of the arcade mode. Not exactly mastery, but enough for most people.

Shenmue is comfy but shallow. I enjoyed it 20 years ago for the ports of Space Harrier and Hang-On. I can see why some think it just sucks, the atmosphere does most of the heavy lifting and if you're not into it then it has very limited appeal.

I grew up on Shenmue too, and replaying the remaster made me realize I really is padded out, especially in disc 2. And the second game may have more things to do, but it's not well paced either, with Kowloon only really being fun.

Shant play III because everything about it sounds awful, especially all the "quirks" of the originals they kept in "ironically".

I'm not sure about underrated since most people agree they're good. But almost every game in their library is good. Advance Guardian Heroes might be the only genuine irredeemable stinker.

That's like the opposite of 'poser core' games though. Those are Clannad aside games that are specifically loved by a genuine core fanbase, but are hardcore in ways that turn the majority away from actually playing them, and so the existence of any poser mealy pretending to play them will be the natural result of them being revered and rightly considered serious.

They don't have the mainstream "look mommy, I'm playing a shmup, and I was told this one is the bestest" factor that something like Ikagura does.
