Steam Deck
Just got my deck, what's the first thing to do with it? I'm especially interested in emulating PS2 and Switch games.

return it and buy something with a 1080p screen

Scope out some sales if you haven't built a library, or jump right in if you already have plenty of games. Check protondb when trying a new game on Deck to get an idea of performance and useful configuration settings. Alternatively, grab a couple of essential ROMs if you don't have any on hand and set up Emudeck. The process is mostly seamless at this point. The only error I encountered was caused by a bad wifi connection.

Get emudeck and install pcsx2, add only the emulator to steam and use its internal library manager for ps2 games.

Turn off the frame limiter and vsync in the "..." menu as this will lead to aggressive performance throttling and slowdown in most games.

This. I just got mine from UPS and plan on installing some emulators. Maybe Lutris too

-steam button + up and down on dpad to change brightness
-r3 + select in pscx2 to show the menu if you want to change settings or use save states
-always check community control configs or play around with steam input yourself if you want
-the trackpad can do more than you think and those 4 back paddles are incredibly useful in every game

Just to clarify, this advice is specific for pcsx2, the frame limiter works well with most games otherwise, so disable this just for pcsx2.

Emudeck for easy emulation access, Lutris for pirated shit, decky loader for QoL stuff and customization, and protonup qt for better compatibility with games. Maybe upgrade your ssd if you want more storage. It's easy as fuck. Then you stockpile your games that you probably won't play.

Retrodeck is better than emudeck, ignore those other fags
Anonymous No.714442823 [Report] >>714443249
>>714442014
Retrodeck has more performance overhead due to everything being forced through a common frontend and leaves you at the behest of the maintainers for software updates.

Emudeck is just an install script package for each standalone emulator, gives you way more control over how everything works.

Doesn't emudeck add a shortcut to every individual rom to your steam library? I don't like that.
I also remember hearing something like it clutters your filesystem and doesn't clean up after itself.
Anonymous No.714443693 [Report] >>714444472
>>714443249
No, you choose to do that or not yourself using the included steam rom manager, I only include shortcuts to the emulators themselves

It IS more messy though, the main working directory is \Home\Emulators\ which can simply be deleted after uninstalling but the config files will be in the original default path for each respective emulator

Everyone saying emudeck etc...OP, if you're used to setting up Emulators on Windows, just stick to what you know. Download the appimage for PCSX2 and whatever else, create an emulators folder and a folder for each one for those app images to live in, and configure them manually. Make steam shortcuts to them the normal way.

Switch emulation is surprisingly good on Deck. Played through all of Red Dead Redemption and Metroid Dread with Yuzu. PS2 works great too, played Ico and God Hand. PS3 works as well, played Demon's Souls and Ridge Racer 7.

Also good advice, but be aware you can end up soft-locking your deck this way because none of the emulators come with SDL controller configs out of the box, you also need to remember to manually invoke controller mode before putting in your binds if you're setting them up in desktop mode.

Why the fuck you asking us, moron. If you just wanted to blog about buying a Deck why not just post
>Just got a Deck!
Instead of trying to mask it with some retarded BS question you don't give a shit about.

I don't normally like gaming on a handheld but I would like a Deck to play Dome Keeper on

I thought your favorite game was Cock Keeper... You don't need a Deck for that or a handheld, since both your hands are busy holding cocks.

now you take another picture of the deck on a game's title screen, post it on the internet, play it for >10 minutes and then don't touch your deck again except to set up emulators that you wont use.

>what's the first thing to do with it?
Play Aperture Desk Job
Grab ProtonPlus or ProtonUp-Qt
Get Protontricks
For emulators just use Emudeck and use archive.org for any of the bios files for anything older than Switch.

Decky is a plugin manager, here's some I like:
>Decky Cloud Save
Plenty of games currently sold or were sold don't have cloud saves.
>Syncthing
Another file backup/sync service like Decky, but requires your other computer to have syncthing installed.
>SteamGridDB
Allows you to edit cover art on steam.
>AutoFlatpaks
Updates your most of your flatpak apps in game mode.
>Shotty
Aggregates your screenshots into your "Pictures" folder instead of steam's weird file system.

>Switch games
You can do it and even have gyro functionality with GyroDSU. But it's not going to be any better than Switch and with last years nuke of Ryujinx and Yuzu whatever problems you have will probably be there forever.

It's different for each emulator, pcsx2 creates a subfolder during installation under root\.config\ and root\.var\app\
