Dusk is great, has truly excellent feeling weapons, very smooth movement and sublime aesthetics and atmosphere, I think that despite having perhaps the most generic arsenal of any modern boomshoot it also by far has the strongest identity.

I like it's soundtrack. The game is fun. But not my favorite. I'm a slow paced pop and shit boomer shooter player. Like Rainbow Six style or "more recently" a game like Ashes 2063. The "gotta go fast" style of these games kind of repulses me. I don't hate it. I just don't prefer it.

If you're playing the first one, the Zealot difficulty is hidden by jumping into the center path. Hard isn't the hardest difficulty. Also you can increase some difficultly settings in the options like the enemy awareness so you should max it out too.
It's really fun on max difficulty because you have to be tactical and careful. Everything can kill you in one second.
Leaning is too OP in the first game, but he fixed it in the second

like i thought it was good but I had no desire to play it again and when people talked about the fucking incredible maps it was like oh there's a few cool setpieces and some decent exploration neat lol
the better levels just reminded me of a thief so maybe playing that first dulled it for me a little or something.

also the duel boss at the end absolutely sucks and every time i hear somebody say it's "one of the best bosses in the genre" I instantly discard their opinion

Iโ€™ve never understood why people say itโ€™s such an amazing fight. I almost feel like itโ€™s a red flag that someone didnโ€™t play the game if they make that claim. Itโ€™s really gay and anticlimactic and honestly gave me the impression that very little effort was put into it. The rest of the game is very solid, though.

For me its the style of the game. Its low poly 90s graphics, back woods horror setting, with crazy metal playing in the background, while you run around at 90mph doing flips and shooting leatherface with a 12 gauge. Its a combination of things that like put together in a nice package.

The duel boss is piss easy, but its really cool, so I like it anyways. Its also a Seal of Nehara reference, which is cool.

It doesn't though. It uses a very modern version of eduke32. You can't run it on original hardware and software, and even with a hacked together win9x port of eduke, it'll still struggle to get 10 fps.

Yeah, out of all the retro revival shooters Hedon is my choice.
You should honestly be convinced it's the best when the second weapon you pick up is one of the meatiest shotguns ever put into a game with a fucking flamethrower alt-fire.
And being able to open it in a Doom editor and mercilessly beat off to some of the art.

I believe a main devs said at one point that if they ever did another fps, they probably wouldn't use something like build/eduke again since it just caused certain parts of development to take much longer than necessary, and it wasn't really worth the "authenticity" in the end.

He's partially right, there's a subtrend of these games that rather than taking inspiration from the older 90s games that take more pages from Eternal and games like it, think Ultrakill, Turbo Overkill, or Postal Braindamaged. That more or less describes the game spot on. It's just that the game has so much to offer yet I find no joy in it anymore. all the levels blend together, all the weapons feel the same even if they split off into two upgrade paths and with the crystal/rune enchantment mechanic, secret hunting feels no longer enjoyable and more "wait, that was a secret" and the 50th enemy horde ambush no longer feels fun because they just melt with how strong your everything is and with life leech being a thing there's just no challenge to it.

For Dusk, circle strafing is enough like 95% of the time, the remaining 5% being cowgirls. You can play it at any skill level and still have a good time.
Ultrakill is much more in line with an action game, you have to have your reactions on point for parrying or dashing and constantly switching weapons if you want to get the most out of it and get S ranks. It's fun if you're looking for that exact scratch to be had, but if you just want to shoot things, you're going to get headaches and frustration, and possibly hand cramps.

I'm actually playing through them now. I'm running around the Pipeworks in the second hub and I'm kind of over it.
The atmosphere is great, the horror is done extremely, extremely well but the biggest hook is the mystery but I feel like I already have 70% of it figured out by now. The gigantic groups of enemies have gotten REEEEEAAALLLY old by this point, if there wasn't the hook with ATHENA through the two episodes I probably would have dropped it by now. A man can only take so many trash hag ambushes before he snaps.

LOOK AT DEM TITTIES
Is it true they nerfed them in a later update?

Also I really like Afterglow and Hedon(Hellrite)'s hub level design and really wish I could find similar games. I know I'm going to get mega bullied for this but do the system shock games hold up gameplay wise? How do they stack up against say Deus Ex (I really like DX's gameplay)

SS1 is the most complexity you can get out of the retro Doom styled shooters, there's like 20 weapons with multiple ammo types.
SS2 is kind of comparable to DX I guess but actually good. Multiple ammo types, skills required to use them, upgrades, different firing modes. You point the crosshair at something and it shoots there, simple.

Both hold up well gameplay wise but the SS1 level design will kick your ass. The fact that it came out BEFORE Doom 2 is mind boggling with how modern it feels. Leaning, free aim, inventory management, exploration, it's fucking insane.

System Shock 2 is a predecessor to Deus Ex some features. It's still very immersive, even the character creation section has you choosing career paths in a blade runner style city. You don't get to talk to anyone in SS2, you just read things and hear other people talk. It's a good game. SS1 is the same idea as DX and SS2 but from an earlier era with fewer features, but it's still a great insight into how we got to the later two games. You can also check out Ultima Underworld, both of them are similar, but UU2 is more advanced than UU in terms of features.
Have fun!

It's good, but I found the style of the game just ugly in a way that was neither endearing nor retro
Ion Fury is my pick of the boomer shooter trend.

While I like DX I can't be insulted at this, I'm looking forward to playing SS2 I guess.
For SS1, just jump into the original game? Is the remake any good to be worth a virtual second playthrough of SS1 or nah? Any must have mods or whatever of SS1 enhanced or is it good to go on a fresh install

I've played UU and UU2, and arx fatalis and fucking Underworld Ascendant, is an entirely different genre but I really wish something new would pop up there. Tried stuff like Lunacid and didn't click with me, I'm hoping stuff like Monomyth and Neverlooted Dungeon measure up but I digress.

SS2 is a lot more like DX but instead of investigating a conspiracy it's more like survival horror mixed with the immersive aspects of DX.

For SS1 Enhanced if you have it on GOG roll it back to the second most recent update, the last one introduced some infuriating microstuttering that Jewdive said they would fix then wouldn't you know it, they never fixed it.
You can jump right into SS1, Enhanced makes it control like a modern game and if you've played any imsim you'll know exactly how to properly play it. The cyberspace segments are straight ass though, you'll know exactly what I mean when you play your first one.
I never ended up buying the Remake, last time I interacted with it was the first alpha demo they released way back.

You're right at home here, huh? Imagine getting this worked up defending literal coomer trash with all the subtlety of a 13-year-old who just found the DOOM wads folder. If Citadel's your magnum opus you should probably quietly enjoy it instead of getting rugburn screeching at everyone who doesn't stroke to cartoon giblets.
