Why does Mario go all the way back to his ship after a star then travel immediatly all the way back to the planet for another star? Why does he not simply stay on the planet and collect multiple stars?

Masterballs are irrelevant since any category that requires catching pokemon you just manip it and can catch literally anything with a regular ball in one turn if you're on the right frame.
A lot of categories in games allow you to skip tedious shit that doesn't affect the actual execution of the rest of the run.
Go to speedrun.com and look at any game you want, they will have a list of rules per category.
