The idol stuff is a bit misleading, they make this big spectacle in episode 1, then pretty much every episode after doesn't focus on that aspect at all.
They don't train for idol stuff, the idol stuff gets skipped almost every time (or gets like a 5-10 seconds sequence).
Typically only the first and last episodes of each season have those long idol scenes. It's 98% a sports anime.
