Not very many good fire pokemon, yet water types are a dime a dozen. You can find a Growlithe or a Vulpix after Dark Cave and that's basically it until Magmar, unless you for some reason decide to ruin your Eevee with Flareon. Plus, you have Gyarados coming up before Mt. Moon and Bubblebeam in Cerulean, so it's not like Squirtle is some kind of special boy or anything. Fact is Charizard actually does live up to the hype. He can fly, cut and strength, too.
