Sony and Microsoft basically quit pretending they aren't just making PCs now. PS6 is running on some custom Linux-based OS with full mod support, and Xbox announced day-one Steam integration. Nintendo dropped a trailer teasing yet another Switch that’s somehow even weaker and still $400. Everyone just shrugged and subscribed to all their game passes. Console war died not with a bang, but a bored sigh.

There used to be an argument for consoles. Exclusivity and hardware optimization. Now, every game eventually comes out for the PC (like a year later) and optimization is crap everywhere even on consoles, but at least PC has modders willing to put in the hard work.

It's the video game equivalent of the dust bowl in this medium. I can only hope the big companies go under and everyone's hungry again to win the players favor for games.

Not even this anymore. Most games come out on PC day 1 now. The only ones that don't are Sony first parties and those barely exist. Squeenix was the only third party company still holding out because they were taking the Sony bribes for timed exclusivity but even they kneeled and said they're moving towards multiplat. FF7R Part 3 might still be timed exclusive if they signed a deal with Sony for all three parts but I imagine that's the final game that'll be like that.

The console war isn't over, Microsoft just placed a field spell card to buff PC gaming and are making a PC console which will compete against Valve's PC console, and also handhelds obviously. Sony lost the platform race, they can't even compete with Nintendo anymore and Nintendo are small fish compared to what we're about to witness from MS and Valve going head to head.

What we do know is that PC console is the future and Valve and MS are going head first into that future. No they didn't. Even if they hypothetically did, it doesn't change the fact that the entire platform is windows desktop based. The era of closed box hardware like a playstation is over. Valve and Microsoft are extending PC gaming to the console casuals on top of already being dominant in desktop PC gaming. Nobody wants a playstation when you can get the exact same type of device but with access to all of PC gaming, multiple store fronts and a wide range of hardware options as we're already seeing with Steam OS.

Game Pass was suppose to be the Hail Mary moment for xbox. Phil bet everything on Netflix style subscription based gaming being the next big thing, and Xbox being at the forefront of it. But instead it completely backfired with Xbox's core install base buying less games overall and not changing the spending habits of anyone outside Xbox's ecosystem. MS is going back to Windows being the focus of it's gaming foray with PC.

Sony can survive as a 3rd party studio publisher, but having all of Playstation's exclusives being multiplat won't be good long term for the console itself.

Nintendo's in a hard spot where they understand they have to adapt to the current market by having many of it's newer entries have elements of modern gaming trends with seasonal updates and rotating content, but they handle it the worse out of any other game developer. Key Cards are also a sign that even they know physical games's days are numbered and will eventually be fully regulated into limited print, collector bait and not something the regular person buys.
