Ctrl/Shift if it's a source game where crouching effects jumping. And C for games where it's a toggle and it's generally not important

C and Left Ctrl are in the same position relative to your left pinky and index finger, respectively, assuming you have your middle finger pulling double duty on the W and S keys.

Avowed made me realize that I need both at the same time.

Ctrl is the one I use 99% of the time.

C is the one I use when I'm sprinting so that I can slide.

I wonder if it was also like this with FEAR. I remember sliding a lot in that game. Did I really press Ctrl to do that? It's such a pain in the ass.

Way easier to press than c or left ctrl.

Both if the game has sliding, since I guess every second FPS has to have it. If the game doesn't support at least up to two keybinds per action, then the devs should be scolded at.

Tried Shift for Roboquest as a recent exception since there was no reason not to have auto-sprint enabled, and sliding/pogo/cape are kind of on the same button anyway for extra general movement.

The point is that they're more or less equally good. Which one you prefer is down to whether you feel like utilizing your pinky is more comfortable than using the middle joint of your index finger, and that also depends on how much you need to use the crouch button in general.
