I think nelfies being on the alliance at all is proof that the gameplay was first and foremost in vanilla. they just needed 4 races on each side and they wanted to make nelfies playable, story be damned

I can think of a number of old video games that cared about story as much as if not more than gameplay, though I can't rightfully claim World of Warcraft was one of them.
Warcraft 3 made very little in the way of sacrifices for gameplay, though I do think in that sense they ran more towards what they thought was cool regardless.

Nah, The Horde/Alliance just shouldn't have been a thing in that sense. Every faction should have had their own base starting reps with other factions that can be altered as much as the player decides to put in effort to do so. The two faction system was and still is shit.

Yep. Have to at least say, the night elves fill in a good niche in the lineup of the Alliance races presented in vanilla (assuming that you couldn't have taken a different elf race).
At the same time, it could have been cool if the night elves formed their own nature-aligned block with the Tauren and a third faction. The Tauren leaving the Horde could have been a good justification for conflict and friction on Kalimdor.

it was really the Burning Legion that drove them from Hyjal. and without the Orcs and Humans, they wouldn't have been able to stop them and would have ended up losing all of their land. the Orcs initially only settled parts of Kalimdor that the Night Elves weren't in anyway, they only started pushing for more territory because they needed resources. if the Elves weren't so stuck up and had just given them some trees, they probably would have been chill.
