These places are actually better in foreign countries so they probably have higher expectations. I have coworkers travel in some shitty countries and McDonalds is considered a high-end restaurant in a lot of them vs the mystery meat kebabs you will get at other places.

They do it because that's what American culture is, not because they think it's fine dining. They want to try the garbage you people eat, not pay out the ass for fancy bullshit. In Australia McDonald's, KFC, and Burger King are all common, but shit like white castle and taco bell either don't exist at all or are very rare yet Americans talk about them a lot so it's a curiosity, even if those two specifically are most famous for being shit.
