Basically he is too much of a brainlet to do the basic math required for tabletop RPGs. Also, at some point he walked into an RPG store that was closed (there was a sign saying that it was closed), interrupted the owner's private D&D game to ask for a copy of Smash Bros., and got some dirty looks from the guys playing. Kojima was very upfront with why he replaced Snake with Raiden. It was because Japanese women weren't playing Metal Gear Solid and when they did market research into why the response was "Because the main character is an ugly old man." There was no real depth to the character switch. It was just an attempt to increase sales.
