FPS as a genre just went f2p mainly. Looter Shooters are an offshoot that you can still charge money for.

but Randy understands it's appeal is couch co-op for when you ragequit whatever live service battle royale, hero shooter, or tactical shooter. So they put the game at 95% off knowing that one friend will buy 4x copies at like $3.99 a copy and guilt their friends into doing a playthrough.

What they've shown so far looks pretty good and I've heard they've dialled down a lot of the cringe humour of 3 so I'm kinda optimistic.

I doubt it. I'm playing through the series right now and so far:
BL1 was pretty boring at best and horribly tedious at worst. The DLC is absolutely abysmal. They barely made any content, removed fast travel to pretend like there's more than there actually is, and just like the main game it just fizzles out. All in all it starts fine and has a nice art style and strangely strong worldbuilding for what it is, but the game drags on for too long and gets worse as it goes on. Not a single exciting moment in the entire game.
BL2 improves some little things, makes other things worse, but the writing and humor are immediately more in my face and the jokes are grating and not funny. So as early as BL2 the series becomes Reddit and it never looks back.
Still working my way through it, but I don't know what they could do in 4 to "redeem" this series. It's too late and the series didn't have a strong start anyway.

Borderlands honestly doesn’t deserve success, but somehow every other attempt at the genre is either so wildly different that it attracts a completely different audience, is so complete garbage.

When Destiny 1 was announced it was seen by people as “the borderlands killer” because sci fi looter shooter made by Bungie would obviously beat Bl2 in every possible metric. And Destiny sure felt nicer than Borderlands to play. But everything else Bungie did (and continued to do for next decade) was just bafflingly insane and very few Borderlands fans became longterm Destiny fans, because being a Destiny fan required being ok with getting robbed blind and having DLC’s stolen from you by Bungie, and paying exorbitant prices for yearly expansions.

“Diablo but it’s a first person shooter” is such a good idea for successful video game. But apparently it’s a lot harder than it sounds because Gearbox is only dev who even kinda succeeded, and their games are full of problems.

BL3 improved so many small things even the weapons are crazier than ever but they drop legendaries very often and the story is just bad. It's kinda crazy to see a dialogue skipper mod being so popular because the writing is just that bad, the humor isn't even the issue the tone is what they got wrong. What's really funny about this is that when they had the live play session a couple weeks ago one of the streamers entered the audio menu and found that they added both a dedicated volume slider for just Claptrap, and audio volume and TRIMMING settings for literally all form of voice audio in the entire game. Presumable, you can now set the audio trim to just immediately skip any of the dialogue you just do not want to hear talking. If adjusting the trim also makes it so the game stops going on pause to hear the next NPC's standup routine that's honestly pretty based of Gearbox to do (even if its just taking one of the most popular mods for BL3 and just making it a core feature in the next game.)

Guys. I tried to playthrough Borderlands 1 recently and it was not fun. The Main Story is fine and Ned's Zombie Island is okay. But the others are pure fucking garbage. Fuck. I am completely demoralized from playing 2. The base game is still a solid 7/10 but the DLCs are so fucking baaaaaaaaaad.

Honestly I've been thinking otherwise, I've been following the preview info too and it really does feel like Gearbox has been specifically targeting areas for improvement from the core gameplay sandbox BL3 established. (Also, to give credit, when handling criticism like people saying that combat could feel too chaotic with just the compass to offer situational awareness of where enemies are at and addressing the issue by adding a Halo combat radar to the UI rather than compromising on their vision of not having a full mini-map to let players focus on the world and less on the UI shows a capacity to listen to what customers are saying and finding a good solution that both solves the deeper issue those players were expressing without just compromising on their own creative vision.)

To me, even with that ability to just trim out the dialogue if you hate it, I still do not have faith that the writing will not be annoying like it has been becoming since BL3, and I'm more worried that the amount of polish being poured into BL4 is because Take-Two is trying to position BL4 as a pseudo-live service to finally take a stab at it when to me I feel the strength BL has had as a franchise compared to titles like Destiny has been the fact that it's never been a live service, meaning they get the chance to properly iterate on their formula rather than being locked into technical debt like Destiny where the engine is so ass and dated that it's a struggle to add something as simple as a fucking ping system to a game that wants to make FPS Zelda dungeons and call them raids.

BL1 is the worst, not that it is a bad game but it hasn't aged well. BL2 is good but still dated, try BL3 or TTWL. TPS is pretty meh, if you didn't like BL2 you probably won't like TPS.

The skill trees in 4 are a mixed bag, some look actually really good but others are stinkers. Ultimately might end up playing but going to wait at least a week to make sure there isn't a rugpull.

I tried getting back into 3 and was once again unprepared for how often you're forced to listen to characters talk while you can do nothing. Even the DLC doesn't respect your time. If 4 stops doing this I'll be happy to buy.

NTA, but sometimes. Some sequences depend on when the dialogue finishes, and some depend on when an animation is finished.
It still makes the game far more enjoyable in the long run, though.

Been playing through BL3 and while the story is atrocious, the gameplay is great. Moze is probably the most fun vault hunter i've played over all the games.

It feels like they're finally toning down the LOL RANDUMB XD humor, which has always been the biggest problem about the series for me. Redemption is possible desu.
