Either make the monsters something that give you real consequences and you actually have to combat beyond driving over heat vents, or go the other direction and allow your dude to make truces/pacts/peace with them so you can do your fishing as a pacifist. The one foot in one foot out way they're implemented just feels like wasted effort on non-bosses that are really just zone hazards. Like the cliffs one, you could just as easily make the need to flee come down solely to rocks falling.
The way they did it I think keeps with how eldritch horror books are written, you can't win or fight in any meaningful way, just delay the inevitable, and that works in a book or in a game where you're trapped somewhere, but you're on a boat that can easily blast away from them with no effort at all. It just doesn't work for the kind of gameplay this has.
