Forza has two subseries; Motorsport and Horizon. the former directly tries to compete with Gran Turismo and has racing cars and real race tracks, the latter is more in line with NFS with an open world map and off road vehicles where you can run around challenging AI opponents and stuff.
Motorsport was the original series, started in 2005. Horizon came later in 2012, but ended up being way more popular.

Forza was always "[other game] but Xbox"

Because Forza always was direct competition to NFS and Gran Turismo. Games had to evolve and improve within time, and it got better. FM4, 7, and 8 are peak Forza Motorsport games, 8th one is ass but still quite playable. I only bought one Forza game and it was the OG one on Xbox in 2005. It was basically the response to Gran Turismo (or 2nd if you include Project Gotham). It was still probably one of the best looking OG Xbox games and did show that the Xbox itself could've lasted an additional year.

Depends how you define fun, for me nothing else compares.

Best adrenaline high and most immersive experience you can get in vidya imo, if you whiff a shot in CS or something it might cost you the round, if you whiff a corner in a sim it will cost you the last 50 laps and probably the entire race.

That tension builds with every lap and with a full sim setup there's a genuine physical element to the mental as well, you're constantly refining and perfecting those laps and trying to squeeze the tiniest of gains out over your opponents.

A couple of hours of really intense sim racing will leave you absolutely ragged but unfathomably elated.

I wouldn't recommend diving in head first with a wheel and everything though, just dip your toes into something a bit more accessible with a gamepad or something, see if it clicks.

good riddance. fm23 was a travesty. it's staggering how bad it was compared to even 6 or 7 let alone a classic like 4. the car models are so fucking old, the sound wasn't very good, the same addon rear wing since probably 3, it had so much hideous taa slapped on it some of the dashboard readouts were illegible. then all that bullshit of wow guys we re-added 2% of the content you already had in 7! it was obvious there was a talent exodus at turn10 shortly after 7 and the built from ground up guy just vanished after release.
