Mario never was from Brooklyn, he was born in the Mushroom Kingdom and worked in the Metro Kingdom where he saved Pauline before she became the mayor of New Donk City. If the city already existed or was a Metro Kingdom expansion funded is still up in the air.

While i mostly agree with your post the original Mario Bros arcade explicitly took place in the sewers of New York (Brooklyn was never mentioned and was completely western fanfiction).
That said, it only applied to that game.
Remember that Mario has no canon/continuity and each game does its own thing, like Mario being a carpenter in the original Donkey Kong, a demolition worker in Wrecking Crew and an arbiter in Punch Out.
