You know exactly when your access expires. Something completely free to play is also not relevant to the discussion. The reason that The Crew was brought up is that it was fairly unique and high profile: a game that was, in its majority, a single player title with minimal online interactivity for the core gameplay, but still forced upon you regardless. Imagine if Dark Souls couldn't be played offline. The Crew was also important in that it was a single purchase with no subscription fees.

The extent to which this would be required, again, is a conversation between the EU and game developers. I'm not going to blanket state "just let people run private servers," because that's oversimplifying the situation. To me, what needs to be done is for devs to be asked "why is it required?" Why EXACTLY does The Crew need to be constantly online? What functions of the game are offloaded to the server versus what's running locally? Something like Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020/2024 has a reasonable explanation for this, whereas something like The Crew does not.
