Visual novels seem to just be, well, novels these days with miniscule amount of choice making. Is there anything with stats and/or lots of choices today? Even something like Season of the Sakura with its branching paths you could go down sometimes without even knowing, seems like a lost craft.

vn are boring, i like Tokimeki Memorial because it is actually a game, unlike VNs. Tokimeki Memorial is pretty much a strategy managing sim and that taps on my autism in ways i didn't even knew

It has already been perfected in Amagami which is a wholly deterministic setup on a grid. No RNG bullshit, routable down to an autistic degree if you want to try and chase multiple girls during a single run, lazy enough that you can just focus on one girl and time skip when necessary.

Well the entire premise of that overly long review is that a blind first try Shiori is impossible. That's the entire jumping off point for the discussion about love as an objective and the absurdity of chasing perfection and everything else that the guy is pontificating about for six hours. So if someone can just go in and get Shiori on their first try without looking things up ahead of time, then the entire video is now suspect.

does some dumdum with no prep winning the lottery of love by mere chance really discount the concept that chasing perfection being absurd? to my mind that only reinforces the notion.

Winning the lottery isn't in your control but winning a game is, so it's less cosmic absurdity and more dandori issue.
So this situation then is more like that webcomic where the game journo dies to the first goomba in Mario and writes an article about what an insightful experience it was.

I mean it's the reason Persona games are so popular. People really want ikusei dating sim gameplay so even a super dumbed-down, simplified version of it plays well to general audiences. God knows the dating/school-life sim gameplay is the main selling point over those copypaste dungeons.

Lots of modern gacha use it as well, umamusume just came out on Steam and is doing well despite being the same ikusei shit from Tokimemo at core

The demand never went away, they just pretend it's something else

translating PC VNs is actually pretty difficult as the games dont have native support for english fonts, you have to do real coding work rather than just replacing text. SFC/SNES games have their text stored as textures rather than as fonts so its much easier.

Haven't played
I have however played GS 1-3 so I assume some of that translates to normal TM
Overall, they're boring. Each playthrough has you sit through every week of a 3 year time span and there is very little actual content within that time. If you know what stat you want to raise then from what I remember at least you'll be finished by the start of year 2 and then you're doing actually fucking nothing for the rest of the playthrough. This problem is even worse if you're trying for one of the secret characters since they only exist in isolated events, you can't go on dates with them, pretty sure they don't show up for christmas or anything.
However, the secret characters themselves are great. The conditions for even seeing some of them to know they exist are complete bullshit, especially in GS3, where the conditions are shit like clicking on the correct faceless NPC in the first classroom background CG twice or checking an ingame homepage in a specific month of the second year and then go to town repeatedly. It's fun that they're there though, and they're largely much more interesting than the default characters who were frankly kind of boring overall.
GS4's default characters seemed a little better from the bit I read with my ebic N5 skills but I could barely even get through a couple months of the game with my pace so fuck that. There was someone that claimed they were in the proofreading stage of a translation in March but no idea what's going on there.

I'm also not sure why Konami made a GS4 but continued to do nothing with basic TM. Is it just more popular or something
