How?

PlayStation is the best at taking advantage of opposition weakness.

The PS2 almost killed Nintendo outright and they had an over 20 year lead. They only survived because of pure game quality.

No? Nintendo survived because they had Pokemon and the handheld market, where they never EVER had any real competition. They realized that with the WiiU and stopped making home consoles.

It was a killing blow years in the making, and by Microsoft's own design.

It really goes as far back as Peter Moore stepping down and being replaced by Don Mattrick. Moore navigated the OG Xbox and early 360 years, stuff like Halo, Gears of War and Xbox Live Arcade happened under his watch. When he left, Mattrick chased Wii's trend with Kinect's launch in 2010, basically throwing most of Moore's work under the bus in the process. This is what a lot of people overlook - by the time you got to 2013, Microsoft was already on thin ice with their core fanbase. Whatever the next console was, a double down on Kinect would've been damning enough. Mattrick ended up going with something so much worse, and Sony saw their chance to break them forever over it. Sony threw the punch, but the wall was already brittle from years of internal neglect.

Mattrick killed Xbox. If the Xbone reveal wasn't early as fuck because they wanted to try to be first to market again like the 360 it wouldn't have given Sony time to back off. Remember everything Microsoft planned for Xbone with its online bullshit we know Sony was going to try until they realized they could backtrack and capitalize on the backlash.

Stop falling for smarmy corporate propaganda.

Relatively speaking sure, in that there was much more ground to lose. The gap between PS2 and Gamecube is far wider on both ends of performance, but it really was just a widening of the already massive gap between PS1 and N64. Still, N64 had games like Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time and Goldeneye that were genuine gamechangers. Gamecube couldn't really swing something on that level.

>Approach both Xbox and Playstation to do something about it in their new consoles
>They do exactly that and are set to reveal this at E3 2013
>Xbox unfortunately goes first on stage and the backlash is so extreme that it ruins them forever
>Playstation historically goes last, and are able to change their presentation at the last minute
You can check this too, the first print copies of Killzone and Need for Speed actually have dummied out code for a unique copy ID system that's supposed to be in on the discs but has been erased before the copies were pressed. People think it was just another part of Microcock's hubris when the reality is that both companies were going to do it, and ultimately neither of them did.
It's ironic because here we are, one generation later, and people actually have accepted not having used games because of Steam, digital-only console models, and code-in-box retail copies being everywhere now. Nintendo even uses the unique copy ID system for their own games, they just use it to go after piracy instead.

When you look at when the games came out it made perfect sense why the GC underperformed. It didn't have a strong launch year.

They changed how video games were made. N64 had the best games and it had Goldeneye which was the console FPS game before Halo/COD.

>I almost completely forgot about the online pass thing. It kinda just came and went
Because of a combination of that E3, rental stores in general going under, and better access to both internet and data storage. The pass served its purpose of steering people towards only buying games new (however little it actually contributed to that) so it's not necessary anymore.
What's funny is that Xbox brought back the concept of renting games again with Game Pass (with Playstation copying it but in a worse way), but now people are so against game rentals that everyone calls it a bad deal and that you should spend $60-$100 per title instead.
