Sometimes there's just so much extra story content that you never engage with
IIRC FF13 had a fucking encyclopaedia for all its back story and terms that no one ever read

When it comes to lore i would much rather watch a video about it than read ingame walls of text.

Name a video game story that is actually complicated enough to need a video like that. A game having a shitton of text lore that nobody bothers to read I can understand.
But the actual events of what is happening in the game are never ever hard to understand in any game.

Sometimes after I finish a story I go to look up what other people are saying about it because I'm interested in their takes. It's often the case that some people will have noticed certain details that I didn't pick up on, especially in games that have branching stories or side content.

>up to Rebirth
Okay I can do this. I'll chat up a little background information and I'll touch on a few details about Cloud and Sephiroth without giving up the whole game. Basically I'll try to lay down a few seeds to follow going into Rebirth.

The first thing FF7 wants you to understand is Midgar. See the Planet isn't just a floating rock in space. It's alive. And the lifeblood of the Planet is the Lifestream. Without going into too much detail because spoilers, the Lifestream is responsible for the existence of... well life. So what happens when people start burning the Lifestream for money?

Shinra was a weapons manufacturer that discovered the Lifestream was an incredibly efficient source of energy. So they created the Reactors, machines that siphon up the Lifestream and burn it as fuel. Shinra rebranded the Lifestream as "Mako" and with their monopoly on the best weapons and the best power source, they functionally took over the world. And their seat of power is Midgar, a floating mega city built over top the villages that built it. The rich are able to live on the upper plate while the villages degraded into slums where the power fight for scraps.

Sephiroth is the result of a super soldier program conducted by Hojo of Shinra, where in they used genetic material from an Alien, JENOVA. This experiment was conducted in a way so that Sephiroth was born.
Cloud was part of secondary experiments to try and replicate the results of the Sephiroth program by directly infusing people with JENOVA and/or Sephiroth cells, being one of the last people subjected to this process and perhaps because of the escape, he survived this and wasn't given a number. The experiment resulted in partial amnesia and he grafted some of his memories onto the Soldier that saved him, Zack.

You never actually encounter Sephiroth in game till the end, he is frozen in the North Crater. All the times you see him otherwise is him projecting himself into other victims of the experiment Cloud was a part of, the "This guy are sick" people in robes and marked with numbers.

Exactly. Ever since kids latched onto the Souls "environmental storytelling" meme, every dev thinks having lore scattered across loading screens and flavor text is super deep. Even the most linear, by-the-numbers shooters now have 18 hidden audiologs explaining the tragic downfall of some janitor in Sector C. Like bro, I just want to know why I'm shooting these guys, not read someone's terminal diary about their dead cat.

Okay I'm gonna get to Cloud and Sephiroth I promise. But here's a question: what is the Promised Land? According to legends from the Cetra, an extinct race of people who could communicate with the Planet, the Promised Land is functionally heaven. A verdant land of infinite life. Well Shinra heard "infinite life" and concluded that there must be infinite Mako there too. So if you built a reactor on top of it, you get infinite money.

So when Shinra discovered a Cetra corpse on the northern continent, they were ecstatic. They could use their genetics research team to take the Cetra's DNA and put it in a living person. So then that person could hear the voice of the planet, learn the location of the Promised Land, and then lead Shinra to it. Which is insanely evil. They named the corpse "Jenova" and for extreme spoiler reasons, this plan was never going to work. Sephiroth was the result of this experiment and he never displayed the powers of the Cetra. Instead he had superhuman strength and stamina and the most efficient killer instinct anyone had ever seen. So plans for Neo-Midgar was scrapped and the Jenova project became the SOLDIER project, where Shinra soldiers were injected with Mako and Jenova cells to enhance their strength. Hey Cloud claims to be a SOLDIER too, imagine that.

I hate when writers make proprietary language for no reason. Blazblue does this shit all the time. Okay so the whole world is full of seithr. What is seithr? Well it's like magical radiation. The stuff is heavily mutagenic but it's also what allows magical equipment to work. Oh did I say magical equipment? I meant to say "Ars Magus." Which is not to be confused with "Ars Armagus," which is a magical weapon. And neither of these are to be confused with "Nox Nyctores," which is also a magical weapon but really really powerful. So powerful that they affect the user. But the term powerful is kind of inconsistent. Because the ability to talk to a doll made from a human soul is considered more powerful than a book that can steal and control the concept of light. And all of this is separated from just good old fashioned electricity or science, which borderlines on being a lost art. Oh but none of what I just said counts as Magic, which actually is a lost art.

Why do all of this? Could you imagine being an editor for this shit?

Why do you even bother, you know it is deliberately vague Miyazaki stuff because
>nostalgia for reading books in English as a kid and not understanding shit + make the players make up the lore for free marketing + GRRM naming conventions and scat fetishism.

If the plot doesn't mean enough to the creator to bother thinking it through, why devote a single second of thought to it? Just play the game and have fun killing things.

Homelander is a blatant plagiarism of Sephiroth
Cloud's a random grunt who didn't qualify into SOLDIER, but fell into the lifestream and got his and Zack's memories mixed up. He also got injected with Jenovah particles so he is strong enough to be in SOLDIER.

Sephiroth thinks he's a Celestial. He is not, because Jenovah is an alien and not actually a Celestial. The only real Celestial is Aerith. Sephiroth doesn't care and is deluded and thinks he's the only higher level of existence on the planet and can do as he sees fit since everyone else is a bug to him, so he's going to reset the planet with meteor.

Someone tell me where I got it wrong
