Valve typically wants to set a standard for hardware, not be the main manufacturers. They tried it without making something themselves with steam machines which failed miserably, so they started actually making their own hardware that everyone else needs to compete with with the index and deck.

>$1200 USD
>+ $500 USD steam deck
>To play VR flat games on a big screen without a computer

$1,700 USD could get you a combination of items that wouldn't be as awkward to use like this.

Where is the market there. I guess I've done that with a VR headset to watch stuff before privately and on a bigger screen with no TV around, but what even is it

>One of the core features is the ability to play flat-screen game that are already playable on a steam Deck, but in VR on a big screen without a PC

Im assuming this would attach the Steam Deck to your body somewhere and attach to the headset, from the way they worded this.

If not it's a $1,200 VR headset that they just want to natively run your flat games on the gaming headset and at that point why wouldn't you just use $1,200 USD for a TV to connect the steam deck to.

I would never, in my fucking life wear a VR headset out in public, in a national park etc. That's just asking to be taken advantage of in a crime. Real homeless shit.

The Quest is wireless, but to play certain games it has to be hooked to the PC.

If the appeal is to play your steam library with a bulky VR headset on to play games on a flat 2d screen, than a TV would do that much fucking better

Because there isn't a large enough market on VR Headsets for developers to try and Valve still is the only one whose bothered for a modern AAA experience tailored to it with Halflife Alyx

Meta 3 does wireless vr from your PC with a basic modern wifi router. I exclusively use mine with my PC and have never connected it via a wire.

Again, the main appeal of this new device is the same as always, vr games. I'd bet the pancake game feature wouldn't even stay exclusive to this new headset.

That is my point. They should have just started from the standard that has been around since the PS1 rather than coming up with something new and inevitably worse. However, it is still better to go to the existing standard late than continue with the current limited controllers even if it will take forever for games to actually support it. At least it will work better for modded games.

>>714496903
Motion controls work better for some tasks and it only makes sense that you would have a mouse that tracks in 3D for 3D games.

Arcade Time Capsule is my favorite VR game but it's cumbersome having to switch from the Quest waggles to an arcade stick everytime you sit down to play something. Split traditional controls are better but we need some VR standard without the fucking wand garbage.

Literally any improvements to comfort, battery life, sharpness, etc will be important. Yes VR has a long way to go from a software UX perspective but the hardware needs to get beyond where it is now. If you're into VR at this point you know that these headsets are only going to incrementally improve things with each iteration, but small improvements are still important.

fuck am I going to do with a headset that doesn't connect to a computer? can I connect my racing setup with multiple USB cables to the headset? no? so it's completely useless, and even if connecting to a PC is optional, the price is a ridiculous amount higher than it needs to be just for niche use cases where you wouldn't have a computer around.

>very low resolution displays
>bad fresnel distortion
>head tracking sometimes glitched out
>uncomfortable headset
>fps is not quite high enough
I feel like if the resolution was at least 4k x 4k per eye, with at least 120 Hz, with more reliable head tracking and a better lens, then it would be a must have. Doesn't seem like anyone's hardware is quite there yet.
