I can't believe I'm the first person to post this, but setting expectations is the actual job of the director. Corporate comes in and says "what can you do?" and the director says "we can do X with Y dollars and Z time" and corporate comes bacl and says "how about X+2 with Y+1 dollars and Z-1 time with a possibility to extend on review?" and the director says "we can't do X+2 for [reasons] but how about X+1 with Y and Z with the same review options" and so on. Corporate *could* plant a poison project and demand something insane like X+10 and you have to share your FTEs with Customer Support or something, but that's not at all what was happened at Xbox.

The video games industry (why is it called an industry anyway?) suffers from too much success, it makes more money than film and music.

I think with this round of layoffs, it was really just the hens coming home to roost. I feel like MS has been allergic to cancelling games after the fallout of negativity they got for cancelling that Fable game, the phantom dust reboot, and Scalebound (even if Scalebound was very likely a fucking mess to begin with when every single time the game got shown it looked like a different genre of game.) Maybe the thought got embedded too deeply that maybe games like Scalebound or Phantom Dust could have turned around if just given enough time.

With how much of a mess everyone knew Perfect Dark and Everwild were from leaks from behind the scenes, I think it was more than warranted to finally just pull the plug on those games if they were still no where close to completion. The only real casualty seems to be that Project Blackbird, but considering what it was slated to be (a live service shooter targeting a 2028 release.) it was more likely cancelled due to risk assessment. If Destiny, the king of live service looter shooters is fracturing with no signs that things are going to turn around I can't even imagine how risky a new IP looter shooter can fare 3 years from now when it's really starting to look like the live service well is drying up fast.

I have my doubts that Motorsport is really gone. Any studio that was hit with layoffs but not fully shut down you should consider with the expectations that many of those laid off will just be given contracts to fill the same roles they got fired from. This is usually how MS operates every time they run these layoffs where 90% of those who lost their jobs just get those same jobs back. In some cases, those contracts end up with either comparable or even higher salaries, but because of the retardation of how corporate America works for whatever reason offering someone the same job as a contractor with a higher salary but no benefits still look better on the books even in cases where the recipient of the contract effectively got a raise even after accounting for what they would need to pay out of pocket now for their personal insurance.

I fully expect at least some of the staff at Turn 10 to just get offered contracts for the same positions while they just work as a support studio for the next Forza Horizon before the next proper Motorsport gets greenlit (or Forza just transitions to being all about the Horizon subseries instead.)

Why are Software companies in general ran so poorly? My sister is a software dev for a random software company and she has told me most of the time she sits around doing nothing. Compare that to me working in the BioPharma industry where everyone is constantly busy and never not working and everything is extremely efficient.

They overhire in kind of a boom-bust cycle. You pick up as many people as you can when you have lots of projects going, make line go up a lot by increased revenue. Then once all those projects complete you purge all your staff to make line go up by reducing costs. The only studio that Microsoft closed that didn't make much sense was Tango Gameworks because Hi-Fi Rush (by their own admission) sold well, was received very well, and won awards. Every other game is made by studios that pump out wokeshit that gets like 500 concurrent players on steam but still costs $10,000,000+ to make.
