What is up with game directors wanting to take out what makes a game good?
What exactly was Kojima for example going for in MGS2 by taking out the main draw to the franchise for most of the game as the playable character? Do they really think people like that type of stuff?

everyone likes a game = predigested slop for the masses
people hate the game but some love it = Kino

according to Kojima himself

he made it more personal by making (You) the playable character with raiden acting as an avatar, and made it a commentary on violence in video games
get on creative dad's level before asking stupid questions

the game is a literal thematic copy of MGS1
"solid snake simulation" was real, it literally beat for beat steals the majority of MGS1, it's on purpsoe you dumbass

That doesn't make it good, "dumbass".

just making snake the protagonist doesn't "make it good" either just because the last game was good and starred him

Does that automatically make it good?

Well a lot of people liked what playing as Snake felt like why would you go and change it? The sales of MGS3 suffered significantly because of 2. Also, why would Kojima make it a twink that he knows you wont like, to contrast Snake, when he supposedly was trying to make you relate to him? Doesnt make a lot of sense

>the main draw to the franchise
Would you really call playing as Solid Snake that at the time 2 was released? It was a better time than any to test how a narrative from different protagonists perspectives would have gone.
Kojima also said early development feedback called Snake an ugly old man.
You're asking this question from the benefit of seeing Snake as a celebrated character for decades already. People liked him, but it wasn't impossible at the time to envision MGS as something more than only the Solid/Naked Snake life story.

Do you really think that Kojima/Konami thought that the American would really rather play as a twink with a more feminine voice? Seriously?

No, the gameplay makes it good. OP has some autistic criteria where he thinks people like MGS1 because you play as snake

So you think MGSV is saved because it has good gameplay? You just ignore a convoluted unfinished story?

Because, at the time, especially in Japan, Twink, pretty boy anime characters were super popular. I mean look at the popularity of Link around the same time, when he was still being portrayed as the OoT version. Kojima has gone on record numerous times stating that he underestimated the hate Raiden would get from the American audience. Kojima literally created him based off of what was popular at he time.

MGSV has bad gameplay
MGS peacewalker also has bad gameplay but the story is good

They've literally gone on record saying that they in fact did think Americans would rather play as a pretty boy anime character.

What? MGSV is regarded as one of the best playing games ever

Would you enjoy the game more if you played as Snake?

>Complain when devs take a new creative direction
>be surprised when every game is samey, sequels upon sequels that play the same or remakes galore
Thank fuck Kojima doesn't listen to faggots. He's one of the few that actually dares to bring new shit to the table instead of playing it safe. We unironically need way more studios like Kojimbles.
I'd rather play any creative bonkers game than another """realistic"""" cinematic experience.

MGS as arcade stealth is better than MGS as a third person shooter
There's a lot less intentionality required with all the detection meters and slow motion reactions, and mouselook trivializes most of the game
Also the open world and level design is significantly downgraded from linear interiors

I feel like his obsession with Hollywood actors is becoming a detriment to the quality of his games. Patric Zimmerman saying all that crazy shit as Revolver Ocelot is such a different experience from Mad Mikkelsen going “Hello I’m Hollywood actor Made Mikkelsen”

It could do without the hollywood infusion but then again, there's no denying it's a boon for the acting quality. I have no strong feelings about it either way. I'm just glad he's still able to put out creative games that manage to surprise you and pull you along for a wild ride. Let the man have his kicks while he's making games I'd say.
