To really "get into" Gundam the original series is pretty much mandatory but the 80's and 90's OVA series like 0080/0083/08th MS are shorter, better animated and can be a better entry point for people turned off by the old and cheap 70's animation of the OG show. Those shows kind of expect you to be passinly familiar with the background of the universe the original show created though (Wing is set it's own universe btw)

Wing is fine but it's definitely a "rule of cool" show where most of the plot points are pretty dumb and I hate that the show in general lacks a sense of geography as everyone always seems to be jumping around the planet and space without much thought. The main gundam designs are great, but I found the rest of the mobile suit designs to be pretty lackluster compared to UC's grunt mobile suit designs. But by itself Wing is a decent watch by itself. If you're interested in any more Gundam, you could try UC, the main series. I'd recommend watching the original 0079 and Zeta if you're alright with older animation (if not, there are movies that condense the plot and are better quality). If you can't stand Zeta's plot and character choices at the end, stop there. Otherwise, feel free to watch ZZ and then the movie CCA, but be ready for tonal whiplash.

I generally agree but OZ were better as Titans knockoffs and antangonists than the A-Laws. Season 2 of 00 in general is kind of disappointing, but the 1st season is really good and makes up for it. I think it's a bad idea to tell people getting into a series to watch the "worse" thing first because then it just feels like doing homework waiting to get to the fun part and they drop off. You should start off strong so you actually get invested in it first before you start filling in a checklist of shows to watch.

That one was a weird case. And he already wrote multiple stories set on middle earth before writing The Hobbit.
The Hobbit in its original version wasn't set on middle earth and was made as a standalone story. He didn't initially intend to make a sequel but the publishers told him they wanted a sequel with hobbits. Then he decided to make that sequel be connected to his legendarium and made a new and different version of The Hobbit that was connected to it and leaded to the sequel.

It’s not even about sequels, it’s about intent and context. Tolkien didn’t *initially* write The Hobbit as part of a larger mythos-it was literally a bedtime story for his kids. The whole “Middle-earth” connection retroactively happened when he started working on LOTR and needed lore to tie things together. Same with Silmarillion, which was older stuff he’d been fiddling with for decades but couldn’t get published. So yeah, The Hobbit *became* part of a series, but it didn’t start that way-OP’s point kinda holds up unless the sequel is baked into the author’s original vision.

Wing is the only series where I actually like the grunt designs way more than any main character designs, and I think the problem was using leftover "hero mech with gimmick" stylings from G but without sticking the landing.

And worse, its the series with some of the least modern non-main releases.

Kino fight scene. One of my favorites in all Gundam. Sold me on Heero's character and it was very cool to see him use Mercurius instead of a Gundam. Wing's biggest strength imo is the directing. It actually has some good directing behind its scenes to make them more visually interesting despite its mediocre animation compared to some modern Gundam series. Despite following some UC plot beats, I think Wing really went out of its way to make something unique. Just the way the Gundams are treated as disposable tools is a big example.
