It's a game that really benefits from the chapter releases and this time you won't have to wait several years for the next one. The first chapter is the most limited and the shortest, but the gameplay evolves more and more each chapter. Even then, the first chapter still blows Undertales gameplay out of the water.

My guess is that rape is completely optional and what comes after it will provide clues how to reach the true ending (hard but not impossible to figure it out without these clues), but will also spoil the true ending similarly to how going through UT genocide ruined pacifist. Like maybe the characters will at least subconsciously remember the horrors of rape and subsequent events and be traumatized for life.
