Putting old MH games and dark souls together in the same sentence is really putting monster hunter in a bad light. The difference in quality between the two is immense. MH games before world actually had distinct combat differences between every single weapon, on top of having a RPG skill/stats system that actually complemented player mechanical skill instead of allowing you to cheese by overleveling in dark souls.

Large open world is not friendly for a MMO. It cost more bandwidth and server processing to simulate more advance combat and targeting, these resources are quite scarce back then. You either have to choose a more server friendly and lag resistant combat or let the client do all the calculation, the latter are more prone to hacking.
