>>714545191 (OP)MGS3 got great reviews over basically being "Metal Gear with Snake again" after MGS2's fakeout on top of actually being a great game with a comparatively breezy Cold War thriller which is why common sentiment was it was the best in the series, especially with its Subsistence version. And especially when it was followed up by the bloated MGS4. People were still bitter and frustrated about MGS2.
MGS3 was everything everybody loved about Metal Gear, everybody on the staff firing on all cylinders from writing to music to gameplay, and Kojima indulgences kept in check. Naked Snake, who was very obviously Big Boss from the second an antagonist was called The Boss and a trailer showed him with his right eye injured, was still energetic and goofy in a way that set him apart from Solid Snake and endeared him to audiences.
That said, RE4 was absolutely momentous. It's figuratively the Rosetta stone of the third person shooter genre, where it went from "basically an FPS but you see your dude and the camera perspective is centered" to "over the shoulder camera, gun held up until aiming is pushed" that's the standard format for the genre today. Pre-RE4 TPS and post-RE4 TPS.
RE4 wasn't just the apex of the franchise, it's one of the most important games ever released, right next to Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, GTA3, Doom, Goldeneye, etc. Not to mention revitalizing a franchise that was stagnant for years and dumping its going-nowhere Umbrella plot.
It's not a fucking coincidence even Metal Gear's long standing control scheme changed post-RE4.
MGS3 has cool cutscenes and good stealth gameplay back in 6th gen when there were actually stealth games for it to compete with. It was easier for games press to jack Kojima off for giving everybody what they wanted. But RE4 was fucking Resident Evil 4 and it unambiguously had the bigger effect longterm.
