4chan was mostly "non-political" before "non-political" meant "right wing but pretending not to be". Old 4chan operated mostly on one rule: "For the lulz". Meaning: Does it make you laugh? To this end people would do silly memes, shit on scientology, or do racist habbo hotel raids. I believe this for the most part truly was more about getting a reaction out of people and laughing about being taken serious or annoying them than anything else. The same people who posted over the top racism, also fapped to trannies (then called traps) with a kind of: "Who cares about the penis as long as she's sexy" attitude. Linetrap was seen as a minor goddess, the Idea of which these days is fucking unthinkable.
This mostly changed around the gamergate era, and all irony or notion of "for the lulz" disappeared and was replaced by both more sincere right wing sentiment, and the afforementioned "no polticis but actually only right wing politics". Both genuine culture warriors, and retards who have been duped into believing that it's niggers and feminists ruining games and not greedy corporations by said culture warriors.
So while I wouldn't say 4chan has ever been "left wing" in any real way, I would say old 4chan was more open to left wing Ideas, and didn't have a fucking hissifit when Bioshock shit on liberianism, or even cared when GTA IV kept talking about the horrors of war. Or hell, when 2013s "Remember me" came out, people talked a bit about it just being a shit game, about missed potential and that's kinda it. If "Remember Me" came out today, we would have threats about how "wokeness" is at fault for it failing for months, because they were "forcing" a female character / diversity like we had for Forspoken, or Concord. But this was Pre-culture war, so a shitty game with a female protagonist was just another shitty game, instead of argument fodder for "go woke go broke".
It is what it is.
