I have to wonder if they were just speculating on Nightdive actually turning the franchise into a success and being worth something. It's not like they picked up the rights cheap in a bankruptcy sale.

But all Nightdive seem to have done is dug System Shock out of one ditch to crash it into another, so I guess there's no motivation to do anything with SS3 for the immediate future. Even the SS2 remaster has barely registered a blip.

It's not really a remaster, it's a remake with some leftover elements from their planned reboot awkwardly included.

On the whole it's... fine. It's done mostly faithfully and does a good job modernising a decades old game, but all of Nightdive's original ideas fall flat and only make the game worse. They've clearly tried to retroactively make the game more survival horror to align with SS2 which doesn't quite work, the inventory/recycling/currency system is just a chore, the music is worse and the new cyberspace is underbaked. But it's still probably the better way to play SS1 now.
