He led the production on the Mario Movie. He's the "Minions" guy. Worked at Dreamworks and flopped so hard he had to quit and make his own studio. Then he made more corposlop and Miyamoto loved it, and that led to the Mario Movie getting Mario his first new VO ever, because Meledandri convinced Nintendo Charles Martinet wasn't good.

Then allegedly Martinet became very upset, and Meledandri dislikes him for that reason, so he wormed his way into an Outside Director position at Nintendo thanks to the success of the movie, and made sure to get Martinet fired.

Between the Microsoft/Bungie split they were known by hardcore gamers and mega-fans for how amazing they were, and how awesome Halo was, as well as their pre-Halo games. They had a passionate fanbase.
Then they quit, they grew and grew, and changed their company motto from "We make games that excite gamers" to "We make games that foster community and care!" and they made Destiny. And you know the rest.

Furukawa (CEO of Nintendo) says that they're not satisfied just with Nintendo fans anymore and want a "wider audience". Nintendo has already peaked, and it's going downhill.

Even if you think they can remain the same as they grow it will inevitably not happen, because the more they grow, the more talented people that liked the current environment will feel alienated and forced out of the company.

Nintendo's expansion of their IPs is putting it in places outside of gaming without changing them in gaming. I thought BotW and New Horizons were clearly iterations of their brands with more "market research" in them, trying to widen the audience by planting "Minecraft" elements into the games.
Going by these next steps I'm expecting BotW3 to basically be "Zelda-Destiny". The phone app with Zelda Notes already commoditizes stuff in BotW more, and is used to collect your play data in the game in a further way.
i think they're going exactly the same route as Sony, but they're technically only at the PS4-stage right now. They say game budgets are ballooning, but it is possible they remedied this by raising the prices to 80 bucks, to AVOID going live-service slop in the future.
But fact is still, you're going to see fewer and fewer First-Party games, and Switch 3 is gonna be exactly as "nothingness" as PS5 has been.

I'm curious about Mario 2 because I'm sure it'll be as good or better than the first film, but I really don't see it selling as much because it's a Movie and because it's no longer Covid, and because the MCU-type audience grew the fuck up already.

i'm just happy with the nintendo games i grew up with and that i can easily hack most of their consoles and enjoy them forever. i don't see nintendo of today as the nintendo of 20 years ago, whenever i see that logo on the screen i know exactly who's the guys i can friendly thank for (and not fucking worship). same thing when i play ps2 sony. i guess they want people to think it's always the same company and will always be and they're effective at that.

It just looks like a design made by actual Japanese people, as opposed to a slightly crusty British design from the 90's, back when 3D modeling was still kind of stiff and primitive.
His proportions are a little chunkier, like in the old artwork for pre-DKC games. His facial expressions have a lot of traditional manga influence going on. It's a reversion to form, not some strange American bastardization, as much as people want to believe that.

Martinet came up with the wacky wacky wahoo himself. Miyamoto liked it so much that they decided that was Mario back in the day.
Since then they've obviously turned that into the direction, and that's how they found a replacement that was suitable in Kevin Afghani, who despite everything still is pretty impressive for the fact that he can sound like Mario and his type of voice also fits with Luigi, Wario and Waluigi. Even if he's just an imitator I think he's a good replacement.

Now it's a company, much like Apple, that have promoted god knows how many sales and marketing people to the front of the company, so once the old guard leaves the newer talent will feel extremely margnialized by all these business people telling them what to do, and at that point it's just another EA company.
