There are more and more game releases every year. How do you find the hidden gems within the mountains of slop? We obviously can't depend on professional reviews for that as they don't review all games and have conflicts of interest.

If it's an indie game (majority of the games released on that chart) then it's slop and not worth playing

I used to follow few people but they went too extreme or died. These days I check ACG sometimes as I feel he presents the games well so it doesn't matter if he likes them or not because It usually is pretty clear what kind of a game it is.

It means it's an indie game. Limited = you will get limited enjoyment from it, likely none at all

I don't look too hard. Friends link interesting things that I mostly ignore, I do a quick glance at the next fest and the big sales, rarely check the pages of studios or publishers that usually make good stuff. A lot of things I find through /v/ threads because there are people here who post outside twitter screencaps and console wars.

How come Valve can't curate games they release on their store? Only time they do it is when it's "anime and problematic".

Gaben intentionally removed any restriction, because $100 from every idiot that will try their luck is good enough, restriction came only when other kikes started to exploit the system and use those game to sell cards

Over the last 10 years i lost all tolerance for unfinished games. Up until 2012/2013 the industry made games that were like 90% finished. Some small DLC over the first couple months and some patches but in essence the game was done. Maybe an expansion a year later. But the industry has shifted more and more to 'minimum viable product' system where they release a broken and half finished game and spend the next X years fixing it.

I'm the kind of guy that picks up a game, plays it all the way through once(or twice if it significantly branches/expands in a ng+ mode) and move on to the next. I don't replay games, i just don't. I don't rewatch movies or TV shows either. I expect the game to be the best it ever can be when i buy it. The games that i like are so insanely rare that i can either play it as it comes out or play nothing at all. Pic related.

I don't like Souls games or any form of ongoing/live service game. My perfect games are story driven and character focused singleplayer games (RPGs) with a grounded story, edgy tone and third person shooter or sword fighting combat.

But all the companies that used to make games for simply stopped. Ubisoft is in the shitter, Eidos Montreal is gone, Crystal Dynamics are off in lalaland, Bethesda takes a decade to make a game, Capcom is extremely hit and miss, Bioware hasn't made a good game in like 13 years.

And indies aren't any better. They keep their games in early access forever because they plan to never stop working on them. They all got the feature creep bug.

Haven't touched any vidya since late may so i think i might put the whole thing on ice until the games that i bought this year, but unfortunately are extremely unfinished, are in a playable state. Pic very related.

It's the main selling platform. I know I'm going to be faced with accusation of valve shilling but it's not their job. Small independent games would have even more trouble marketing themselves if Gaben started acting as the arbiter of what gets any visibility.

There are only two types of games: progression games (aka movie games) and performance games (aka arcade games)

Once you understand this identifying a good game is simple

You don't know what a game is and you likely never even played one. You have the same mindset as modern journalists. That's why you hate games. Every "game" you posted is a movie game.

For indies, I go to a storefront with some basic quality control like GOG and check by whole years of releases.
I'll be missing out on some good stuff but most of the worthwile games will likely be there.

Learn your preferences and use filters. huge chunks of those slop games can be filtered out just by deselecting the usual suspect tags.

the sad fact is that you'll only really discover games via the algorithm which is unreliable as hell, big marketing most games cant afford and you use adblock anyways. only surefire way to find something is to spend hours searching yourself and be in communities where indie devs hang out and even then thats too much shit to go through.
Ironically making video game making tools so accessible has both made tons of new unique experiences possible but also buried them under a mountain of actual shit.
